A coyote first for me #8326040

Yesterday at dusk.....saw coyote in hay field......working a blown out clay tile spot.......suddenly froze.........then went vertically in air..........coming down on both front legs.....I'm thinking on field mice or vole nest.......is this normal for coyote.......have only seen fox before do this....
