I am sure you have noticed you can ask ten different trappers how to catch something and will get ten different answers. My advice is to follow tracks when it snows. All ten will agree the most important detail is location. Cats are not hard to catch if you get a trap in front of them. Not spooky like coyotes. Curious like coons.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Danny has a point, a little scouting pays well. And they aren’t hard to catch, but you have to be where the cats are.
One thing I found with cats here in my SE corner of Nebraska, habitat matters but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. The biologist I have spoken with many times at our G&P offices told me the real common thread here in habitat is stands of large mature trees. They evidently spend a fair amount of time up in large cottonwoods here for sleeping and safety. Around there those are mostly found along creeks and river systems. Thick cedar groves and draws are a close second.
So I always start there in good looking catty areas.
Then I just have to find tracks. Even good habitat doesn’t mean there is actually a cat or two in there. We don’t have lots of cats here, but enough to make it worthwhile to target them. You need to find tracks evidence before setting for them, like anything else you trap.
I’ve found it isn’t always about the set but that matters. The key though is good habitat then locate tracks. Then make the sets right where they travel. And since we don’t have many cats, hit multiple locations like that to get the odds in my favor.
Good luck.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

And FYI, I do have a copy of ray Milligan’s cat trapping book.
I lean heavily each year on Charlie Dobbins land trapping book, it has a great cat section. I still use his cassette tape wad flagging technique each season when I am making cat sets. He also mentions habitat and locations as key.

Good post jabNE....not a cat trapper as we don't have them here...but good info.
There are lots of great cat books out there...a guy could learn something from them ALL.
