Most people in my area plant Beauregard. They didn't do so well last year.

What do you guys plant for highest yield? We have sandy clay and I will have a layer of mulch on top.

How many lies will people believe before they realize their own idiocy?

I think weve planted beauregard the last several years too. Ours didnt do great last year either. I tried Georgia jets a few years ago and they grew well, but we saw a lot of splitting and frankentaters so I wont be going back with them. May try some centennial this year.

I like Beauregard flavor the best. I cover the rows with black plastic
Last year's harvest was a bumper crop with many going over 3 pounds

I used cardboard last year for ground cover and the ground dried out underneath
I'd think plastic would be worse. I think pulling weeds and cultivating is best

interesting. How did you water and fertilize?

I cover my rows before planting then cut an X in the plastic
I plant, water and fertilizer through that X

I'd recommend Covington. My Dad and I have grown them with good results in the past.

It is also the go to variety for many farmers in this area.

I hate pulling weeds. Black plastic is my go-to for weed control

What fertilizer do you use? I have found a higher potassium fertilizer give a higher root crop yield.

For sweet potatoes I use cow manure that has been on a pile for years now
I try to avoid commercial fertilizer, but I do add a little miracle grow to my water when the blossoms start

I compost old leaves and green grass clippings which makes great fertilizer. If made in a big tumbler and kept well dampened you can have compost in two weeks. It does take work though.
