I looked it up since I was curious. The squirrels in Alaska are actually considered Pine Squirrels. They are a subspecies of the American Red Squirrel.

I always thought that the pictures of red squirrels didn’t quite look like the ones around here.
Now I know why.

Squirrels vary tremendously over their range. Fox, Grey and Red squirrels look very different in different areas. The Southern Fox Squirrels are huge and very differently colored than ours here in Ohio. Many have black masks. Some of the Red Squirrels have gigantic ear tufts compared to ours.

They are SUPER fast. I have one in the small stand of trees in my backyard and it bullies the (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) out of the gray squirrels. They are nasty little boogers.

Our Fox squirrels in Eastern NC come in all combinations of colors. I have seen blond, brown, and black fox squirrels.

I had some folks at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game confirm my findings. Maybe you should check your sources! grin

Dr. Goggle says there are 25 subspecies of red squirrel, can’t real go by common names, some people call um pine squirrels down here too. Husky, here’s some homework for you, do red squirrels follow Bergmann’s rule?

I haven’t heard of Bergmann’s rule. But I’ll look it up.

The squirrels up here are known to have a disease in them. So Alaskans are advised not to eat them. But that looks like a good amount of meat!
