Our teacher spread green sweeping compound on the floor to keep the dust down. She had the kids set mouse traps and paid us five cents for each mouse.

I went to Center Point School 1st through 4th grad and was the same thing. We probably had 60 kids in 3 rooms with a coal stove in the corner of each room. It was taller than that one and the door was at the top. It would have the whole stove red in the morning trying to warm things up but do not think it was ever warm. The rooms had high ceiling with tall windows for the summer and no one had air conditioning. The consolidated the schools in the 5th grade. Lunchroom was downstairs and two of the local ladies cooked good hardy meals every day on a six-burner wood stove with two big ovens.

Picture of Miller's School in Randolph Co., NC 1911 or 12. Not sure how the grades were done. My Dad and his 3 sisters are all in the picture. Quite the range of ages.

Looks like they're all girls too, what up with that?

Our Graduating class of 20 was about two to one. Girls being the majority. Sometimes during harvest there would be only two of us boys in the class room.
All but one were on the football team.

Osky

There is truth in what you say Osky! I went Kindergarten through Eighth grade in a school that had two grades per room and it did help.

My father graduated from a one room school in the 8th grade.

I have his graduation certificate and the application for tuition for Highschool.
Back then if highschool was desired you had to pay tuition similar to the system of college education is currently.. The school was converted to a home and is still present today.
