Six of our birds were over three years old and had stopped laying. I’ve been meaning to butcher them with my granddaughter and finally got around to it The granddaughter getting the marked birds out of the coop. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/02/full-272-246351-img_2054.jpeg) The chopping block. Removing the breast halves. Prepping the veggies while I prep the chicken meat. The green onions really got to her. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/02/full-272-246354-img_2103.jpeg) It turned out pretty good.
Eh...wot?

Good thing you made soup out of them Probably tougher than boot leather Raising her right, too many have no idea the chicken in the store ever had feathers on it

I was able to get them tender. The rest went to the bone pile for the fox, hawks and buzzards.

I bet the rest of them there chickens are laying eggs like crazy now LOL They're ten months old and are laying pretty good. They didn't have a clue what was going on. The granddaughter would quietly get the banded birds out of the coop and we'd breast out two at a time until the six old ones were done. I killed older birds in front of the good ;layers once years ago and it really stressed them out, they stopped laying for several days. I don't do that anymore.

We rotated chicken every two years…… WACK…….. After we chopped the heads off we'd let them flop out. My two labs kept trying to retrieve them thinking they were pheasants or something. I didn't give them any chicken parts, don't want them thinking they are food. Part of their jobs is to protect them, not eat them.
Eh...wot?
