Cell cameras are not a legal check here, and good luck having service in the areas I trap. There are some guys who run some, but it is a novelty thing, very few guys could afford to run cameras on fifty or a hundred sets. Back when they introduced wolves here the Federal trapper was running telemetry on some of his wolf sets and I know the guy I used to get my telemetry collars for my hounds from made a bunch of them, minus the collar, for a trapper in Eastern Washington to put on his cage traps. No idea if it was a legal check in Washington or not. I was just in his shop one day when he was making them up and he told me what the guy ordering them said he was using them for.
My technology is an indicator stick in the drag, that way I can check from a distance, if the stick is gone I know the trap has been moved. Last year WSTA was able to get cell cameras added as a legal way to meet trap check requirements in WA . There are trap monitoring devises that do not employ a camera and we were not able to get those approved. Any kind of visual check like you describe is legal in WA. I wish you'd hollered at me Bruce, might not have been able to help but my satellite trap checks work much much better in remote areas than cell cameras.

I am glad to hear you made headway with the cell check anyhow ! Their mind was made up from the get-go so I don't know we could have got more. In three years, we can take another try at it.

After pondering a bit, I guess that I am with Savell. I got into fish finders and was obsessed with constantly depending on it instead of just fishing. That took all of the relaxation aspect of fishing away. I still have it on the boat, but hardly ever look at if I even turn it on anymore. I feel much the same way. There's more to enjoy about the sport of it than just the catching. I like lures a bit more than bait for the simple reason it makes me feel more involved. Not that there's no nuance to bait, but a lot of it is just set and wait. With the lure you have a bit more nuance. Where you cast. How far you let it sink. How fast you reel. Do you jig it or not. Lures are the best way to catch fish imo.

In Manitoba a cell cam that takes pics every day whether there’s action or not, or can take a pic on demand count as a check. Ours is every 72hr minimum. Problem is cell coverage, but it allows a guy to set FH in some areas. The last one I got in a foothold would’ve been a great one to collar with a GPS! But that’s a whole different ball of wax…lol

Front facing sonar is very much like spot lighting deer. You still have to get the fish to bite, but takes the fun out of it for me.
I sold mine and went back to an older unit. I turn mine on to get temp and depth. From there I decide where and how I’m fishing for the day. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, but that is why they call it fishing and not catching.
