It's -10 right now and expected to get to -22 next week. My buddy says that my traps will be frozen and it's almost impossible to trap when it's this cold. All of my traps are bedded in wax dirt. Have pan covers on them and are covered again in wax dirt. W/ a little sifted natural dirt on top. Now there's fresh snow on them. I tested one last night when I was checking. Worked perfectly. But it was -2. It's only gonna get colder.

I like when it is cold and stays cold. So much easier to maintain working traps. Freeze, thaw and rain and wind is the worst I have dealt with in Kansas.

Never to cold and the snow will keep them from freezing down

It's the guys that get the wild swings and 3' of snow one day at -25, +40 a few days later & rain that got it real rough. As long as it stays cold you're laughing.

If it's staying cold don't worry about it. It's freeze/thaw cycles that cause issues

Depends on the ground. Cold brings moisture up from the ground like condensation on a window, same principle. I operate heavy equipment and you do encounter different soils and moisture levels in different areas, some is drier, some not so much. I have sets on gravel ground that never freeze and sets near swamps that you cannot keep working, even the dirthole fills with water and freezes shut.

I won't work as well in minus 22 either, but ya never know, it depends...

If you’re using wax dirt beneath and above the trap you should be fine.all of my sets in the Forest are still working after 2 weeks of -15 degree weather.

Well I Guess I will have to defer to everyone's opinion that they are good to go. Last night I have a coyote on camera that I would SWEAR he's stepping on the trap. I thought maybe it was frozen. I guess he got lucky!

cold weather is good for footholds. its the snow and wind that disables them here.

That's why I always use this particular antifreeze,

[Linked Image]

in the bottom of the trap bed. Then waxed dirt or sand, then the trap and cover with waxed dirt or sand. This antifreeze works to -20°F and has a rust inhibitor.

Looks like I'm gonna need some of that. I have 2 bait sites w/3 footholds in front. Cameras watching the both sites. Yesterday I had pics of a coyote all over one of the baits. No way he did not step on one.
