I have a couple of hundred that are hard backs and perhaps another of about the same amount that are paperback I belonged to the Outdoor life book club for maybe a dozen years in 1970 & 80 Did anyone read the article written by Bryce Towsley Called LOAFERS It is in the FEB 2025 issue of the American Hunter magazine He begins the article by recalling a grade school teacher he had sent a note home to his parents explaining that he reads to much and how that will have a negative impact on him. and they should discourage him from reading He explains that reading is why he is where he is in today.s life He claims that He learned more by reading than he ever did by attending any schools of formal education And than states that he hated school but did well because he enjoy reading And the love of reading is the reason he is a successful magazine writer And I FEEL THE SAME WAY He took The words right out of my mouth I have actually said almost the exact same thing As a 5or6 year old I was always out looking for bird nest or frog or grasshoppers or maybe big game such as a pheasant chick just because I was curious and wanted to get a better look By the time I was 7 or 8 I knew I WANTED TO BE A HUNTER and hand in hand reading and my love of the outdoors always kept me learning and being successful

I have encouraged my kids, siblings, and nephew to read as much as possible. I have always said "I don't care what you read, as long as you read."

I too collect the African white hunter books. Also have a bunch of Capstick. “Jungle man” by major P.J Pretorius is one that’s worth a read. Also love the maneating leopard and tiger books from India. Corbett is great but “nine man eaters and one rogue” by Kenneth Anderson is my favourite. Those maneater hunters were a different breed of men.

w side rd 151, yeah I read that article...very well done....loved the story. Looks the NRA has turned the corner.
Gulo aka Jack Whitman has a very nice style of writing...really enjoyed his books.

Outdoor, hunting, vintage children fiction outdoor and adventure books such as those by Stefan Meader, Jim Kjelgaard among others, first editions if possible but not necessary as well as adult real life adventure books, history, and science

Not to mention old trapping books

My interests are vast and always expanding at last count I had over 9000 books and that count is several years old

I don’t know what the kids are going to do with them all when I die i just hope they realize that many of them are valuable such as the autographed copy of (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) i Was there by Elmer Keith or the personally autographed copy of Last of the breed by Louis lamour, and there are a couple of hundred more in there as well as well as many first editions such as a first edition of old man and the sea

Ya it’s a addiction

Not really a collector piece as far as I know but Crazy White Man was a good read as far as woodsman tales. It's very "My Side of the Mountain"-esque although it's actually older. I guess I like those stories of people just going into the woods, relearning how to survive, but by choice not necessity.

Lifelong reader and 30+ teacher. Over the years I have owned thousands, but now I am culling down to my favorites. I like man v nature stories like Shackleton. Also partial to my own how to book on Lure Hunting: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CLKHTLJS?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_P2HENQ9RZMY2QGK9J1HV

I buy nearly all my books used in good or excellent condition from ABE Books. They bring together hundreds of third party sellers and you often have many choices in price, quality and vintage of the same title.

It's very rare that they don't have a title I'm looking for.

Eh...wot?

An old friend of mine had an entire garage full, on built in shelves and dozens of boxes, all separated by type, many thousands!
He thought he was sitting on a fortune...unfortunately very few people collect or even read anymore.... I have no idea what happened to them all when he passes, probably went into a dumpster

So what's y'all s rarest book?

I have a copy of Cornwallis Harris "Wild Sports of Southern Africa" in 4th edition with all the hand-colored plates
I 2nd state of 1st edition of Theodore Roosevelt's "Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail"
"Blue Tiger" by Harry Caldwell
"Elephant" by Commander D.E. B;Blunt

and many other of equal scarcity.

While this is not a book, but a pamphlet, I have never seen another copy for sale anywhere

Land sales Mike! Cornwallis Harris? Very nice!

I’ve read blue tiger and elephant. Good stuff right there!
