Malukchuk, I’ll have to try and set some female traps next chance I get. I thought maybe some of these males were identifying as female lol.
Seldom, I have read a few coyote studies but I guess I haven’t come across the study you are referring to. I’d love to read it if you know where I can find it. I’m not a new canine trapper, more of an on again off again due to work and family priorities. Just thought I’d ask a question and hopefully get some feedback from some of you well seasoned coyote trappers. I don’t have the link anymore since it’s been some years since when those types of studies were talked about much on here. I like you would have to do a Goggle search on coyote densities which included the 5-year kill period. From memory I remember if there are too many coyotes in a given area, the bred female will throw more males in her litter. If the population is down OR there is some increase in prey the female will throw more female pups. Furthermore, the study talked about the depopulating of coyotes from a given area that a 75% reduction in the coyote population every year for 5 consecutive years was needed to stabilize the density at that low level. If one year was missed you’d have to start all over as if you’d never start the reduction.

Seldom, thanks for the info. I’ll see if I can find it. I would be really interested in reading that study. Thanks Keith for finding that paper. For those in the mood to learn more about coyotes, this is a very interesting study that has pertain to many discussion on this forum. From the Canadian Journal of Zoology- "Coyote responses to visual and olfactory stimuli related to familiarity with an area"
