I used to back when I was younger ask away and I will answer if I can, some horses come to love it others it’s just a chore, mine loved being on the trapline and would actually come running in from the field to be saddled something that didn’t happen other time of the year

I haven't but it would be a great way to do it.

You can see the sign and the lay of the land from a saddle very well and cover a ton of ground so for scoutin a horse is hard to beat. Checkin a line already out is great too- they will know if you caught something long before you can see it.

I never figured a good way to haul and set a bunch of gear on a new line or spur tho. A snare line might be a little easier but I haven't tried it yet.

would seem a really good pack mule in tow with traps and hauling catches would be a sweet set up , that said I haven't ridden in 30 years but it would sure get you places

I did back in the 70's. No pack animal. Just from the house. Can't carry a whole lot. Nothing colder than being horseback. I was pretty young. Only brought out skins not dead animals. Need a real gentle horse. 6-8 coyote skins make a Pretty good wad. Some wont like it. Have used my feet a lot also. No pack basket. Used my old boyscout back pack. You can cover more ground and catch more stuff with a 4wd. If your headed someplace remote with water and grazing you could pack in over a series of days and set up a camp. Can get real bad in winter. I have only done that in the fall for elk. Weather can still get dangerous. You could string out a longer line with a pack animal, maybe stay out a few days to get everything in place then just ride in to check. Use the pack animal to pull everything. Be careful. Plan for emergencies. If things go south might be awhile before anyone can come after you.

What pack saddle panniers did you use? Hard or soft? I’m thinking I should use my hard side ones just to keep traps from pinching.

I have 4 horses and 2 donkeys I pack in 12-15 miles to elk hunt. I’m looking to just keep my tent up and trap a few weeks after elk season over with if it’s cold enough to keep everything frozen.

Last nov sunrise.

Looks like you got it covered for a nice campsite. Good luck. I hope you catch a bunch. Never used panniers never used a pack animal when I did it. Lived in a pretty remote place in CO. At least remote for CO at the time.

You're way ahead if you've already packed out bear.
