So everybody knows osage orange is king of fence posts. In parts of the country where osage orange doesn't grow black locust is second only to osage orange. Black locust is very hard and heavy. Does Kansas post guys recognize black locust as a good post?

Mostly used for firewood here. Hedge is just to common

Here too but hedge will last 100! We're getting more black locust here and I'd like to see the post become more known. Not as mean as Osage orange either!

Most Osage Orange windrow's came about from the Hedge Apple's ability to have a green wood post set, and it has the capacity to sprout and take root..

Black locust guys may be able to confirm this, but once heard the key to using them is to cut the tree green, then leave the posts on the ground on in a pile for about a year, then peel the bark off them. Heard if you set them green, with bark, they won't last. One advantage is most black locust grows pretty tall and straight. Hedge generally doesn't

When you put a post in the ground it's a good feeling knowing it's still going to be doing it's job in a 125 years. I hang deer stands every year in hedge trees. Bobcats don't scare me any.
