So everybody knows osage orange is king of fence posts. In parts of the country where osage orange doesn't grow black locust is second only to osage orange. Black locust is very hard and heavy. Does Kansas post guys recognize black locust as a good post?

Mostly used for firewood here. Hedge is just to common

Don't know about Kansas but a black locust post peeled and sharpened will last 40 years in the ground.

Here too but hedge will last 100! We're getting more black locust here and I'd like to see the post become more known. Not as mean as Osage orange either!

Most Osage Orange windrow's came about from the Hedge Apple's ability to have a green wood post set, and it has the capacity to sprout and take root..

Black locust guys may be able to confirm this, but once heard the key to using them is to cut the tree green, then leave the posts on the ground on in a pile for about a year, then peel the bark off them. Heard if you set them green, with bark, they won't last. One advantage is most black locust grows pretty tall and straight. Hedge generally doesn't

It is the best way to chase away spiders. I poke a hole in them with a nail, and toss them in the crawl space, attic, under the stairs and all the spiders dissapeared.

A lot of hedge around here and a fair amount of black locust. No one uses black locust. Ran short of hedge once and cut three locust posts. Felt like a traitor

Around 27 years ago, I helped a friend of mine cut and put in over 270 black locust posts. Those posts are still all working fine. On another part of the farm, the locust posts his dad put in in the late fifties are still strong, though the parts exposed to the weather are considerably smaller than the parts in the ground.

You can buy Ship Mast Black Locusts, that were selected to grow straight and quick, for making into fence posts. They are clones made from root cuttings of an exceptional tree.

Peeling black locust posts was the worst part of the process, in my opinion. I enjoyed cutting the posts. We used some ridiculously big trees for some of the posts.

Hedge is king for sure but black locust grows close, straight and tall. I could get 5-6 black locust posts to one hedge. And without looking like I fought a bobcat! laugh

When you put a post in the ground it's a good feeling knowing it's still going to be doing it's job in a 125 years. I hang deer stands every year in hedge trees. Bobcats don't scare me any.
