Well - just a few days before the season ended here, I got this boar coon that was missing a lot of fur on his back, and had a bloody scab where it was being rubbed off to go with it.

Perfect practice animal for a new guy is what I was thinking.

If he wasn't bad enough - he had porcupine quills sticking out of him, and maybe a dozen holes from those quills. I ended up with 3 or 4 holes in the fur, and I think it was me re-opening the holes from the quills. I haven't put a hole in fur in the last few that I've fleshed, and I was being pretty careful.

With a pelt of such poor quality, what do you do with it? Do you ship it to auction anyways and hope you get 50 cents for it??

A rub that bad, and in the middle of the back like that, is not worth salvaging. Best chuck that one.

Cut the tail off and hang it on your rearview mirror

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

If the tail is good, you could strip it and use one of them home tanning orange bottle kits. It'll make a good decoy on your coon caller. The rest of the pelt is worthless in that condition. Good for you to remove it though to help ground nesters.

Good practice, flesh it and toss it.
