Now that deer season is over I've put traps back out. I'm not having any trouble getting opossum and raccoon in DP's. I caught 5 oppossum and 2 coons this week.

But I've not gotten any coyotes yet. I'm fine with giving it time, if I need to. But I thought I'd check with y'all. They're all dirt hole sets with the "back" side blocked off in some way and a duke 550 or 650 a few inches in front of the hole.

I started with Caven's Terminator bait in the hole, and a week ago also got No BS Lethal Injection. But I've been reading that many have better luck with local meat. So I'm adding rats because I have plenty of those.

Set 1: This has been here about 3 weeks. I have a teaspoon or so of NoBS Leathal Injection. Today I added a rat in the hole.

The set is just above the center of this photo, backed up against the buckbrush. I've seen coyotes come through here on camera, though its been a few weeks since I've seen one on camera.

Set 2: This has been there 1 week. There's a teaspon or so of NoBS Lethal Injection. Today I added half a pack rat to the hole and the deer spine. There's not much meat left on it, but I think something was still dragging it around.

The set is just left of center of this photo, along the edge of the edge of the ag field. There's often coyote tracks and scat along this edge of the field.

Set 3: new today, down in the creek where there's lots of tracks. A little Letal Injection and half a pack rat in the hole. The hole is mostly covered with the drift wood, and the creek bed slopes up behind it.

So what do you think? Should these work?

I like to stay away from the timber here in KS when trapping coyotes. Not saying you can't catch coyotes in the timber but your going to be dealing with more deer, coons and possums than coyotes. Look for long running features in more open country, fence lines intersecting. Hedge rows intersecting, long running draws, crop change edges especially if pasture or crp is part of the edge. Some of those sets look a little tight for my liking. In ks find the livestock and you will find the coyotes. More traps will definitely increase your chances. Good luck.
Also this is tougher time to catch coyotes. All the dumb ones have been killed and the survivors have seen it all by now. Then through in the thermal season and they are pretty edgy by now.

Might try a drop of gland lure in January and February. Sets will catch as long as the wind is right and you set on obvious coyote sign. Stay away and be patient.

yes sir, I believe you're correct.

Something dug out the pack rat without getting caught. I'll drive down tonight and check (this photo is from an internet connected camera).

I have more luck in open ground for some reason. They seem very suspicious of baited sets in timber. I think a coyote is more comfortable working a set when he can see the area well. I do however catch them in timber and cedar swamps when snow is deep, you can set their trails then, no need for lure.
