Bottom line I wouldn't have posted the picture on any site!

Lol. Why not?! It is an interesting critter that passed by a trail camera and got it's photo taken. I shared it because I've been trapping for many years, caught many coyotes, seen many photos of coyotes and domestic dogs on camera, and this is the first time I have seen anything like this. I know most of the local dogs within a couple mile radius, at least the ones that like to roam, and never once have I seen this. I am quite confident this is not someone's "pet", it is wild. And as such I posted it just so others could weigh in on whether they had any experience with a critter that looks this way. To me, it has every feature from the hackles, build, tail of a coyote you'd see around here, but clearly the spots above the eyes are not a coyote trait. So I was opening it to others to weigh in.

And jbyrd I didn't miss someone's pet, I didn't miss anything because I had no active K9 sets in the area to begin with. I had not reset the area after I caught the female yote a couple days prior because I was short on time. I'm not sure where you are in KY, maybe you aren't far from where I'm trapping. Maybe you should give me your number and if I end up getting close to this one, you can come over and get an up close view since you say your eyes are so bad. Maybe pet it on the head and feed it some kibble since you're so convinced it's somebody's pet lol.

It’s got some domestic dog in it obviously, but if Obama was black, that’s a coyote.

ADC, what general part of Iowa are you located, if you cut the state into 4 pieces?

Do you have hybrids like that down there?

The coyote ID expertise by some on here is a hoot.

That AIN'T a domestic dog.

As a matter of fact, that particular color "phase" is not unheard of here in the deep South. I realize that's in Ohio, but they're out there.

SE and no we don't that I am aware of. We have some weird colors, but I have only seen those in pictures, in traps from the SE part of the country.

Seriously, this is the best picture he posted. I don't see how anyone cannot see coyote in that critter...

I caught a very similiar looking animal in Indiana many years ago. I thought for sure it was a husky breed type dog due to the color and pattern as I drove up to it. What made me even more suspicious is that it just laid down as I approached it. The eyes and face were what had me puzzled which I felt it was a hybrid type coyote.

I approached it with my snare pole as I was keeping them alive on that line. It remained relatively calm as I got control of it to remove it from the trap. I did check for a collar or a collar rub mark of any kind on its neck. None was noticable.

This was on a new permission hog farm and decided not to chance taking it away with me. It was very calm and docile during the release process. It didn't run off when I first released it. I walked back a short distance to my ATV and just watched it momentarily.

It finally realized it was free and it did finally get up and trotted away and kept looking back at me. I have a photo but not sure where I put it.

I have seen many coyotes in my day with a wide range of colors and patterns, but I have never seen one that could have represented a true coydog like that one did.

I still wonder about that animal to this day every now and then.

That guy was actually on my farm in KY so slightly closer to you swamp. I didn't realize it would turn out to be this entertaining! As I said earlier I do have more photos from the same day of him but I posted the better ones. He spent some time standing in place so several of the photos are nearly identical. I also have a couple pics from several years ago of a yote that was colored like an orange Creamsicle but I'm afraid to post that, who knows what kind of responses might come from that or what riots might ensue lol.

I'm curious what the temperament of that crossbreed would have been if you got it straight out of the den, before its eyes opened.

My full coyote had to many issues. I had another for 15 1/2 years, I think was a half breed, who was excellent.

Foot Tickler, you should post the picture of the leucistic, orange, Creamsicle coyote. I once saw a dead coyote colored like that on the South side of State Route 35 between Dayton and Xenia. I later saw a live coyote colored like that right on the outside of Xenia, a few mikes from the dead one.

Ok you asked for it! Bring on the naysayers! It's funny you mentioned Xenia Keith, the spot I hunt and trap in OH where these photos were taken isn't all that far as the crow flies from Xenia. I'm sorry about the terrible quality of these pics, they were taken from my phone to the computer screen years ago. I also apologize they are so cropped down. I tried to upload less cropped photos but the site is telling me the image sizes are too large and that was the only way I know to get it to work. I think I probably have the originals on that laptop but it's at the house and I'm in KY on the farm. Slow trapping to start the weekend, only picked up a coon. I'm thinking it'll get better this week though. [Linked Image]

I've caught several, not sure how many, colored like the original coyote. This was fifteen or twenty years ago in sw pa.

Also caught several colored up like a red fox, with white tip on tail.

Caught at least one black phase.

Caught one that looked almost blue grey, should have kept that one.

My observation, if you have red phase you will have black and other phases.

My experience over the last maybe twenty five years and a lot of ground .

This coyote looks very much like the road kill coyote I saw on 35. Since they were close, I strongly suspect they are related. About how many mikes were you from where I saw them?

[Linked Image]

The live one I saw was even brighter. I thought it was an odd colored Irish Setter until I got close enough to see it was a coyote.

Sure looks like a coyote to me. They come in a lot of flavors in Pa. All white, all black, red, cream, and mixed.
