This female was removed per the landowner request,, I used some charred wood. Any wrist sized log would work,, but the charred wood really grabs their attention and can really soak up the urine and hold the smell for quite some time…I used fox urine and cavens violator 7.
I don’t hardly use dirt at any of my sets anymore,, tired of getting contaminated peat moss and wax dirt is just too expensive…I gather up dry lawn clippings during the summer…
This set is virtually rain proof.. and does pretty good in freeze /thaw conditions… it does freeze up sometimes, but just take your frozen pancake off and scatter fresh fry grass.
Trap is elevated about 8-11 inches off the ground and trap is bedded 8-10 inches from the point of the log.
Put some yote droppings on the opposite side of the trap for guidance,, shoot some urine and gland lure on the point and you are done.

When you miss one do they carry the lure stick off someplace?

Naw,,, I put the lure on the tip of the log… and just rest the stick I used ontop,,, the smell is still there,,, and they seldom try to carry the log off because it’s a little too big.

A variation of the pipe dream set, using charred stick instead of pipe?

In that video they did of Chicago urban coyotes, at point, they set one of those red/blue yard gnomes alongside of a hiking trail they knew coyotes were using. They then got videos of coyotes marking it. Very funny.......but also instructive. They are incredibly smart, but also predictable.

Totally different than a pipe dream. Put these on logging roads with a dead snag on the edge of the trail, good gland lure and a shot of urine, deadly on every K9 that walks by.

It’s just a variation of what joe was saying,, grass is a covering used for decades,,,Charlie dobbins had flat set variations were he used chopped up grass on the spot,, I think he used a knife and a piece of wood to chop the grass up.
I pretty much quit using dirt or peat moss several years ago.. I got a bad batch of peat moss that was contaminated with something and it was too late to try to dry anymore..i rememberd the city had a place where folks disposed of their yard waste and I thought I might find some peat from someone’s old flower bed,,, I noticed there was some lawn clippings,,, and it was dry,,, my brain started clicking… I filled up a few bags and I started to make all kinds of flat sets using grass for cover,,,
Wax dirt is just to costly for me,,,
Even have a cool” dirt hole” with grass variation
Just get a log about the size of your leg,,burnt is really good, but not necessary..ream out a hole just under the log,,, enough to put lure or bait in,,,bed your trap like you would any dirt hole set,, and cover the area with dry lawn clippings,,,, you want to at least make it a decent size area around the trap,, probably 2 feet or so.

You don’t always have to have dirt to cover a trap.

I can agree the trap covering is a similar method, I see what you are saying. A pipe dream set is meant to keep the lure working in all weather and hidden, making the coyote continue to search for it. The trap set and covered with wire mesh snd grass also to keep it functional also.

I meant no offense, just how I interpret the pipe dream set, I don't consider the covering the key part of it.
