Who in here makes their own fishing leaders? Been thinking about making my own leaders/ quick strike rigs for northerns and musky. Probably in the 30 to 45 lb range.

Do you use single barrel sleeves? Double barrel sleeves? What style crimpers do you use? How do you crimp them? Do you just twist the wire? Etc.

Looking for different ideas and suggestions.

Here in salt water land, all the hand made rigs I've seen are just twisted ,even for sharks, store boughts have crimped sleeves, never looked to see what type sleeve

Double barrel sleaves. Don't know what brand of crimpers I use, but they are sort of like heavy duty dykes. 80 pound coated stainless steel multi stranded wire.

I've used plastic coated braid for years. You make a 6 or 8 wrap twist and melt the coating with a lighter but don't burn the coating. I've used 20 to 40 pound test and caught barracuda and pike up to 40 pounds on flies with it. Easy and fast. Make a loop on the other end and use a loop in your braid or mono. For sturgeon or bigger game I'd stick with the crimped sleeves.

Good luck.

Pete
