Had just barely made it into wolf country when I high centered my car on a snow drift. An hour of digging and calling in a truck to give me a boost got me free no worse for wear except for my pride. Ate up all my remaining daylight though. Anyways, it wasn't all for not cause I got this photo as a souvenir. [Linked Image]

It's got all wheel drive and I got it for a good price. My last vehicle was totaled by a moose about seven months ago and I had to get what was available in my price range.

Also if you think my ring is funny now you'll find it way funnier that it used to live on my thumb, I just moved it cause it was rubbing against my knife when I was skinning.

Hopefully a truck will be in the budget soon! Good luck with the wolf hunt!

Can't come soon enough. How many beavers does it take to get a new truck? Lol

Good for you. There was a time I trapped out of station wagon. If the desire is there, feed it.

You guess right. It does great on ice and snow but it's only got about 4 inches of clearance. Not much in the way of trunk space either, but it was shy of 100k miles and in my price range. Gets me to work just fine.

I made it over three of these before high centering myself in about a foot of snow that had been hard packed until the sun weakened it enough to drop my car through.

My Subaru Forester has 9.5 inches of clearance, and has four winter treads with metal studs. I was checking traps last weekend on roads that were totally iced over. You couldn’t stand up outside the car. The Subie never slid or spun, even on the hills.

I guess you just moved to AK?……lol.
Google price on a car or not, what good is it? Might as well bought a Tesla.
Hang some snares and set some steel if you can, they hunt 24/7.
Wolf hunting is a very different game. There’s outfitters that do one week hunts, and some don’t advertise their success rates…..and they’re set up well….lol
Never give up, and it never hurts to alway be packin. If I had you packin that 45, we would’ve had that wolf I saw the other week…lol

YESSS!!
I drove a Subaru wagon a couple years on the trapline. I bought it cheaper than I could have bought a 4 wheeler. Even pulled ATV trailer behind it sometimes. Only problem I had was blood running down both front and back windows from "luggage" carrier on top. lol Other than that it ever missed a beat.

Be prepared for ADC if he see's you came out of the closet BB. grin

HA! I don’t remember denying it. It’s possible to be both a lesbian and trapping rig………. I guess.

I buy cars at auction for a living. I’ve always said Subaru’s have 2 out of these three things. 1. Smell like weed, 2. Full of dog hair. And 4, for some reason good tires.

I guess the weed smell could actually be lingering Skunky Backbreaker?? Dog hair could be yote hair??? Might have to add blood stains to the list. smile

I'm not judging, if BB is a lesbian then so be it. laugh I was going to ask how long it took to vacuum out the dog hair though. LOL

I make fun of my mother in law and her lesbian mobile all the time. They do handle good on compact snow and ice though. I'll stick to pickups personally

My mother has a Ford and a Subaru and the Subaru treats ice like dry road and the Ford acts like a hoverboard. The difference is incredibly stark. So absolutely right every Subaru I've ever been in was full of doghair and they almost all had good studs. I vacuumed most of the dog hair out and then filled it with bark instead. Hauled most of a cord of wood one trunkload at a time and but I was wishing I had a truck bed pretty badly within the first week or two of driving.

They used to make a pickup called the Baja. Sadly it went out of production quickly cause it didn't sell that well. Might have done better if it had been closer to an El Camino than a stunted pickup but it is what it is.

Almost certainly wolf. You could see the claws on some of them and it's big even for a Lynx.

Strange spacing of the toes for wolf tracks and you can see a faint outline surrounding the toe marks similar to that of a lynx. Also strange the wolf stayed on top the snow as they usually sink in deeper. Could be solid snow though.

I agree with Ryan M. My first thought when I saw the first pic. Your picture of the bridge and surroundings doesn't look like an area wolves would inhabit. Looks like lynx could be there if there is food.
Rings get caught on machinery. Wait till your married to wear one. Even then, wear it seldomly.

Snow was hard packed, enough so that you could cut it and stack it into bricks. Plus they were a couple days old so there was a decent amount of time for the tracks to be distorted by sun and wind. Some of the tracks had claw marks though which is the main reason I'm convinced it's a wolf.

Also the area is known for having wolves but not known for having lynx.

I have an actual platinum wedding band somewhere (probably floating around in the gun safe) I wear a silicone one everyday for that reason. If it gets caught it'll break off, and it doesn't conduct heat or electricity

before the baja they made the Brat, it was more of "truck" than the baja. It had just a single cab, small box.

made it from '79 to '94

Bought a Subaru this year and my coworkers started calling me Scissors. I told them I have the same diet, and it’s undeniable. Honestly, it’s a great vehicle on winter roads.

Back seats laid down can haul a deer or all my trapping gear and dead beavers no problem - Jet Sled is the key for keeping things from getting too messy. Going to get a hitch gate and roof rack for additional storage.

before the baja they made the Brat, it was more of "truck" than the baja. It had just a single cab, small box.

made it from '79 to '94

I rode 820 miles to Canada in the back of a Subaru Brat in the early 80s. A buddy and I just had a sleeping bag each, that were not waterproof! Brats had factory rear facing seats with little hand grips and seat belts.

I had a Subaru in ealry 80's 70's model. A guy from Cali moved to northern WI and put it up for sale. It was front wheel drive, 4 cylinder, great mileage, and I could drive in the woods full of traps. Fit right between the skidder ruts the loggers left so I could get to ponds really easy. Had fully reclining front seats my girlfriends and I enjoyed as well. Great little care. We recently tried a SUV model and was told I was either a pothead or lesbian, I really had no idea about the label these days.
