As I understand it, The penny ain't going anywhere because Lincoln's likeness is on it, and Illinois has a great deal of influence in that decision. Where was Illinois vast influence when Lincoln's statue was removed in Boston in 2020? I don't think Trump gives to poos who's face is on the coin.

The man is mentally defective. He proves it every time he opens his mouth. Musk and Vance are no better. You voted for Kamala? People with TDS are going to have a long four years. Thats okay, we Conservatives just had a long four years with the man with Dementia

Something to consider... yes pennies cost almost $0.04 to mint, but a nickel costs closer to $0.14. So if you're rounding to the nickel, those cost almost an extra dime to mint. Maybe we need to *gasp* follow the Canadian model and re-think the metal content of our nickels. The Canadian nickel is mostly zinc.
I believe Canada stopped minting pennies in 2012 and stopped using them in 2013. Did the Canadian government buy back pennies that were already in circulation? Would the US government buy back american pennies at face value? Why not eliminate the nickel too? Who cares who buys back what if it increases prices? Maybe we should go to card only….there’s only a 3-4% charge for that.

The last coin that was discontinued was the half cent. If you adjust for inflation, that would be synonymous with ditching the dime today. Penneys represent an insignificant digit. You haven't been able to buy anything for a penny for many years now. Same can be said for the nickel. You can drill a hole in a nickel to make a rust free washer. A stainless steel washer will cost you half a dollar. Trimes and two cent pieces were discontinued in 1873. Half cents were discontinued in 1854. Trimes and 2 cent pieces were discontinued 19 years after half cents were. I have about a dozen trimes including both the silver and nickel ones. I only have 3 two cent pieces. The only smaller coins I have than trimes are Mexican, Maximillian I gold pesos. Keith Nice catch Keith. I shoulda knowd that. I have trimes and two cents pieces. Do you reckon they ditched those two coins just to simplify making change?

pennies are to pay sales tax. I am for keeping them. Gas prices would change by the dime instead 0f a cent. good by $9.99 welcome $10.00
this and my states sales tax is 7% hard to do that without pennies.

The one dollar bill could be next, in favor of a coin. They tried that with the dollar coins not too long ago and didn't catch on. People rather deal with with folding money. Plus it's cheaper to make folding money though the lifespan is shorter.

The man is mentally defective. He proves it every time he opens his mouth. Musk and Vance are no better. You voted for Kamala? Mentally defective? Considering it costs almost 4 cents to make a one cent coin, it's called common sense, a term the left isn't familiar with.

this and my states sales tax is 7% hard to do that without pennies. Pennies are for change, don't tell me ypu walk around with a pocket full of change and pay with it. It's been done successfully in other countries, no reason we can't figure it out also. It all works out in the end with rounding. Final prices ending in 1, 2, 8 and 9 get rounded to 0, prices ending in 3, 4, 6 and 7 round to 5. And when you pay with card you pay the exact amount.

I spend all pennies made after 1982 and keep all made before. I've done that since the late eighties.
Keith reminds me of my Dad. Every time he got change he'd stow away any wheat pennies. Been doing that since the '40's. Of course he never did anything with them. After hoarding for 6 decades he couldn't let go. So after he died my Mom told me to get rid of all his coins that he squirreled away. I got .02 for every wheat penny and I got a list of desirable ones. Went thru all those pennies to find the desirable ones. End up with about 1/2 dozen "desirable" ones. Trouble is they were all worn and not worth much. After all like most rare collectable stuff its all about condition. End result of all his hoarding was just over $200. Yes, he had over 10,000 wheat pennies. 6 decades of hoarding for what? $100. Not worth the effort in my mind. The argument could be made that he lost money on his hoarding due to inflation. a penny on 1975 is now worth six of them. If he'd used them instead of hoarding them he'd gotten more value out of them.

tlguy. you notice when rounding you always round up. And some of us like paying with cash. Yes I pay with a card more than I like since I don't get to the bank often or collect rent from the rent house that always pays in cash. Going to a cashless society I figured would be brought up. you can be locked out of buying and selling with the push of a button. That's the direction we are headed And if you enjoy freedom cash needs to be keep alive. Not even close to "always rounding up." For purchases ending in 1 and 2 you round down to 0. For purchases ending in 6 and 7 you round down to 5. So you round down literally half the time. I think someone from Canada posted that they always stop the gas pump on a price ending in 2 or 7 so they get that 2 cents of gas for free!

Little old lady with her change purse would go crazy if your took the penny away. You mean the one your standing behind in the checkout line? LOL When I was a kid we had metal, then little plastic coins for mills, .1 and. 5 cents, supposed to have been for paying taxes, like on gasoline.

I remember these for pennies and other change I remember those little coin purses used to have bank and other business logos on them, to advertise the companies that gave them to you. I don't think Ive seen a new one of those since the late seventies. Keith
