Is the absence of fur on the tail like this an indication of mange?

This will be my first coyote to skin and put up. Also wondering if the absence of fur on the tail matters to the fur buyers at the auctions?

Maybe it's a practice yote

It doesn't have fur anywhere else really. Looks like it does to the uninitiated or people that's been in Texas too long.

Yep, that looks like mange. I’d have just left it for the ravens here.

It's somewhat odd for one like that to survive this long with mange up there, though with a milder winter and older coyote it could of been survivable

If I let it freeze solid for a day or two, that should take care of the mites right? Thinking it would be good to practice on, but I don't want mange grin

If you practice on a frozen coyote you may never try to skin one again. smile

I have nothing clever to put here.

That is a zero value coyote! Find a better one to practice on, between the stink and the scabs you will not learn much!

Do not skin. Mande mites are transferrable to humans.

I would say mange. They either get left or thrown on a brush pile to burn.

Sarcoptic mange mites can infect humans but I don't think it happens very often. Also, mites are host specific, so even though mange mites from foxes and coyotes can affect humans, the infection is self-limiting because the mites will not reproduce if not on their host specie.

I've skinned a lot of red fox with mange on the tail like that coyote in the picture. That's where it almost always starts on the fox around here, on the tail. If it hasn't spread to the back legs I put them up. I'm not throwing away an otherwise good fur because of a mangy tail.

I've never been infected.

Eh...wot?

Like Lugnut said, it seems to start on the tail and they can still be sold if the rest is good. Put the thing in a large plastic garbage bag and spray some Raid in it if you're worried about catching mange.

I have had them get under my skin and they itch like heck for a few days.

I have had coyote mange too. Makes an itchy rash for 2-3 days. Human mange is called scabies. Never had that and dont want it. I would be more worried about exposure to insecticide than coyote mange.
