One of these days we may be catching fish in Lake of the Woods over 150#. Hope I live long enough to see it.

What kind of sturgeon are they? Definitely not white,,,,or green…. Lake Sturgeon Crazy,,,, Shorter nose and no side or top skates,,,… So they fight? Do they have the red meat that needs to be removed like white sturgeon?

Put in for a tag for the upriver season 49er and when you draw, just let me know. We’ll make it work.
The 180 lber this year was like the 4 or 5th largest ever. Biggest was over 212. We haven’t had a shad population hatch of late so our fish are a little skinny compared to what they used to be.
Vinke, they usually put up a decent fight, unless you hit the notochord. They don’t twitch if you hit that. Biggest issue is when you get your spear rope tangled in your other ropes. As far as eating, I want all the fat and red meat taken off.

There are quite a few guide services that rent out fully equipped shacks with everything you need except a license and beer. The upriver tags have a much higher success rate (currently at 56% and it's only going to get better) compared to the big lake (<10%) but it also takes almost a decade to draw that upriver tag. Otherwise you can just buy a Winnebago Spearing License over the counter for $65 as a nonresident any time between March 1 and October 31. Good info. Thanks. I was wondering how that works. At less than 10% I bet a lot of people don't have patience for the big lake. I suppose the beer helps though. Maybe I missed it but does DNR age the fish?
