I acquired a 028 saw, I've got a new bar and chain (sthil) for a 025. My question is what do I need to know to see if I can use it on my 028?

what sprocket you are running

chain will come in

.325
3/8 sometimes called .375
and .404

it is most likely you are .325 or 3/8 , look to see what he bar on the saw is currently , if your other is the same then you have the right sproket

if not you can change sprockets

if you can not find the numbers and you have a working chain on both , measure center of the rivet to center of the rivet on a link of chain , that is the number it should be close to .325 or .375 give or take a few thousandths for stretch

How do you know what sprocket you have? Are there only two different sprockets?

It is marked. 3/8lp, .325, 3/8, .375, .404,
etc. Match that with the bar stamp.

Both bars say 325 the 20 "says 81 the 16 says 63. I'm guessing they'll work. The only mark on the sprocket is 15.

.325 is the Pitch and yes they will work 81 and 63 are the number of drive links , the difference between the bar lengths

81 is a number that also tells you it is a .325 20 inch as it is just a special number no other bar seems to hit.

there are 3 numbers on a bar
pitch like .325 that is the distance between the rivets in the chain that sets what sprocket you have/need also what is at the end of a bar for that sprocket as well

then guage 0.43 . 0.50 . 0.58 0.63 that is the thickness of the drive link and the slot in the bar to accept them

then number of teeth / length of the bar in drive teeth
when you are making a chain you don't measure you count drive links

if you got a worn 0.43 bar you could use a feeler gauge and see if a 0.50 chain will fit in it

.325 is typically a 0.50 or 0.63 on some stihls

I am an ODD DUCK running 3/8 .058 chisel but I can still find it and I have 2 saws and several chains and bars set up for it

when an 0.58 bar gets worn you run 0.063 chain

When I get a new bar
I also get a new drive sprocket.
They wear.
But yes fit sounds right.

Gauge and pitch from the sprocket, bar, and chain all need to match. Other than that, the size of the mounts on the powerhead (pretty universal, Husqvarna only has one size and style, borrowed by echo, Makita, dolmar, and others. Stihl has the homeowner variety, the standard mount, and the big bore mount)

You might have a hard time finding sprocket and clutch for that 028.
I just replaced the crankshaft seals on my 032 and figured I may as well replace clutch, bearing and sprocket at the same time.
Not a chance. I called Madsen's and they don't have any parts and they said Stihl doesn't show any as being available anywhere

I hope my Stihl 028 Wood Boss lasts me the rest of my life. Hasn’t been used much, and I got in ‘86 or ‘87.

Stihl is trying to phase out parts for the older saws. Any model number that begins with 0 is getting real tough to source anything OEM for. Chinese companies are making copy cat parts being that stihl's patents are expired, but I wouldn't trust them for anything real important (Chinese bar nuts, fine. But IDK that I want a chinesium jug or piston)

Yeah I thought that might work too but no luck. My sprocket is the floating rim type that is mounted inboard of the clutch. I can find the spur type but I much prefer the floating rim type. There are a few of them on ebay but they are not correctly configured. Mine has to also drive the oil pump so one of the little cut-outs is shaped differently than the rest.

Right that's why 9/10 professionals run Stihl. And the one Husqvarna guy in every logging camp makes all husky guys look bad. Don't ask me why, but every guy I've seen being Husqvarnas to camp always looks like he drives a windowless van full of candy. They're always hanging out alone in a connex tinkering on their huskies while the rest of us drink beer and go fishing/hunting after work.

I had a little 012 I think about 45 yrs ago. Forgot it at a job site one night and it got stolen. Best thing that happened to me with that saw. I'm sure the guy that stole it would have given it back.
