now I get it , they put this stuff on newer vehicles for people who haven't a clue how to drive

but for god sake it NEEDS to have a turn it of right the !@#$%^&*() NOW button/switch

it is bad enough it keeps turning on with every key turn and they are even nutering trucks with it now

frankly some times your tires need to slip , you just have to claw your way out or up

so Saturday wife wants to go out , after I hit the deer at the beginning of the month I bought a co-workers used min-van 2008 Honda oddessy

he kept it up well , it is very comfortable , drives and rides nice , I own 4 vehicles now , 2000 expedition got rear ended in Nov they can get it on the frame straightener Mar 3 , I hit a deer with the 2004 gmc 1500 Feb 1 needs a radiator before it moves again , headlights probably a good idea also. along with everything that holds the radiator and headlights and the bumper is a mess also and the hood.
my 3rd is a 1998 Chevy 1500 it runs and drives good but is a standard cab with no topper and no place to put groceries when we go out.
4th is the 2008 Honda oddesy

there was one light on the dash when I bought the Oddessy TPMS tire pressure monitor system , the batteries in the tire pressure sensors are dead , it is that age
I figure this is no big deal and the price was right and I needed something as I am driving back and forth to the hospital an hour away ever week sometimes more than once.
the patient needs to be comfortable. so not my 98 standard cab

plan is give the van to my school teacher kid in MKE when I am done with it

great dry road car

first stop light I hit with a good amount of slush at it , it is hard to get going , but I manage , I am doing well even on snow covered roads when I have to take them , but no inclines yet
I will admit winter driving rules apply , I don't really stop for stop signs unless needed , just slow way down and look and time my approach so I never stop rolling.
I know the police don't all know about that winter driving rule.

the google directions thinks it has a shortcut , I wasn't navigating and my wife doesn't keep layers turned on so that she can see contours so I am doing decent then I hit the hill , I made it up a good ways a mile or so , then the steep part , traction control just keeps taking away rpm so you can't spin the tires

I am trying to turn it off , but the switch isn't working , in Honda's wisdom they made it so that if the TPMS light is on , you can not turn off VSA as they call it aka traction control
so 3 times I back 1/2 mile down this hill and take another run at it , I get a few feet further but I an still 300 yards from the top.
so I perform a 4-5 point turn on the flattest section of road I have and head back the way I came and look at the map myself , sure enough a state highway to a county highway will take me right where I want to be sure it is 3 miles of added driving but it keeps t the valleys

Honda owners make useless videos but after about 40 minutes of research we find VSA requires the TPMS to be working , so we found the 2 fuses that control VSA and now you can spin the tires all you want once snow is passed I can plug the 2 fuses back in.

that night I am talking to the MKE kid they were going up a hill in MKE Friday night and saw a guy backing down the hill in the other lane very controlled but backing down a few hundred yards.
I was like newer car? yup , yeah he doesn't know how to turn off traction control.

they figured out why , when they got up there to the top of the hill , if you catch the stop light you are on a mess and you have to be able to spin your tires or you will never get moving even with good tires.

my sons 2011 f150 has it with 4wd , are you kidding me , luckily it is one switch to turn it off in the middle of the dash but it has to get turned off with every key cycle because it comes back on.

this little mess made me decide I think fixing the 2004 gmc 1500 wt is worth it , call me a neo luddite but I have enough of computers in my life I don't need one telling me how to drive when it don't know snow or mud

My jeep has it. In 4low its automatically disabled. If the road looks greasy I shut it off before I leave the driveway. ABS is nice though.

Thats why i refuse to own a newer vehicle. My old 98 f150 had a good maual t case, manual locks, windows etc. Was a great truck almost 300k on it when heater core went out. Sold it to a local and got a 95 f150, good ol 302 butit has auto everything. The hubs are gonna be swapped to manuals soon, if i can find a manual tcase it will vet swapped. The autos nice....untill it dont work.

What is a "key"? These new ones don't even have one! Do you want to let your truck run at -30 below? Nope, it shuts itself off after 10 minutes.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Traction control/ABS has saved lots of lives, making it worth it he inconvenience that it causes sometimes.

If you want to shut it off permanently, climb underneath and cut an ABD sensor wire at the wheel hub.

The ABS also ticks me off. Apply the brake and barely skid at all and the peddle jumps all over. Darn near wrecked a couple times because of it. I know how to slide or take my foot off the brake. I just don't see how this feature helps anyone.
I do have a traction control on my 09 Ford escape but you have to turn it on if you want it...the way it should be. I've never used it though.

I know your a mechanic but Traction control and abs are not the same thing.
Cut the abs and your idiot lights will go wild. In states with inspections your car won't pass reading those codes

I absolutely hate ABS braking. You can't feather the brakes and control your stops. It takes longer to stop and takes control away from the driver. I guess maybe it's better for new drivers that don't know how to brake without locking them up in a panic.

I know they are, but they're almost always controlled by the same module, sort of. The ABS module obviously controls ABS, and there usually isn't a traction control module. Usually the restraints/air bag module provides yaw rate vehicle angle, acceleration/deceleration into, etc to the ABS module and PCM, which then can individually brake wheels and reduce engine power. I'm any case, it requires input from ABS sensors. ABS and traction control can't do their thing without knowing the rotational speed of each wheel from the ABS sensors. That why cutting an ABS sensor will disable both permanently. (Edited for clarity).

We don't have inspections here, so I can't speak to that.

cutting them seems a little permanent , they have plugs , just unplug , squirt full of dielectric grease and Black electrical tape them over then to each other , so when you might want them to be together again to make the light on the dash go away , just plug them up.

the cliff notes version
traction control BAD when you know how to drive and what you need to go places the manufacturer thinks you shouldn't go.

stupid manufacture would have you pull over and wait for the snow to melt in 2 months or waste the time of emergency services calling for help

just wait self driving cars are coming what will it do in 4 inches of snow when everything is white with no contrast ?

SO you guys are too lazy to push a button. Heck auto start has to be turned off everytime I start my truck . Anti skid and traction control are 2 different things. BUT on some models 1 button turns off both. push the button once turns off one . HOLD THE BUTTON down turns off the other. BOTH can be turned off. Climbing under a car and "unplugging " something or cutting a wire is the most crazy thing you have said this week. I know it's just Monday so you still have time !!!

A lot of vehicles don't have a button to turn them off.

Never seen one that "TRACTION control won't turn off. ABS is totally different and by law must be on ALL vehicles.
