In the winter I stick to bottom edge sets under shelves or the corners of bends in creeks. Bob noonan has good videos on it and I think there’s a few on YouTube

At this time of year all of my mink water is froze tight so I used strictly bottom edge sets with “plated”110 or single spring 160s. The depth of water in the photo was close to 4’ deep.

Noonan’s video takes the principles of the bottom edge set beyond where Smythe’s book left off!

Where the trap is afixed to a 3/8”-1/2” thick plate (mine are 4”x8”) with brackets when in the set position. When the trap fires the trap releases itself from the plate, as the plate only holds the set trap in position. The plate pretty much anchors the catch and above all, allows for accurate placement with the trap already set on it.
