This is my first year to set any traps since 2020/21. Kind of got the bug and decided to put out a few sets on January 15. Ive had roughly 16 sets out for the past month. The dry winter we’ve had has made it easy keeping them working and it’s been enjoyable. Plan is to send everything to Moyle’s to get tanned.

Flint hill,
I only took one belly pic. None of them were great. The cat in the last picture probably has the best belly but I didn’t take a picture. Also I didn’t put any of them on a stretcher so no belly pics there either. I just skinned them out all the way to their claws and rolled them up and put in the freezer to send to Moyle’s. Thought NM outlawed trapping. What's the scoop? Looks like you know what you're doing?

Great pics! Would be nice trapping in weather like that.

Does Moyle’s accept green, unfleshed hides?

Wannabe, I’m in northwest NM.

Longbeard12, I had a rancher friend of mine call and tell me he had been seeing a LOT of coyotes on his place so I went and made some sets. Turns out he was right. I’ve caught 12 coyotes, 2 bobcats, and 2 badgers off that place and caught another coyote and bobcat of another one of his properties about 30 miles away.

Martentrapper, we can only trap on private land. They banned trapping on all public lands. The area I live is majority BLM and state land but fortunately I have access to some private land to trap.

Whitecliffs, I had missed on Moyle’s website that they don’t accept green pelts. All my coyotes are stretched and dried. I was gonna send the bobcats and badgers frozen but I guess I’ll be putting them up as well. Bobcats shouldn’t be a problem but the badgers need to be fleshed and I’m far from good at fleshing properly. I usually end up tearing some holes in stuff. Guess I need to learn how to properly flesh.

Thank you all

I've salted beaver and lions and sent to Moyles, you still have to flesh and the salt should be dry on the pelt. its a lot easier to box them up as you roll them. We have a fur auction coming up on the 28 of Feb to March 1, the sale starts Mar. 1 if you can come the day before I can help you with the Badger. I have a Red Fox for the skinning demo. You can get your cats tagged there also.

Tom, thank you for offering to help. I’ll try to make it to the sale. Where is the sale at? We used to have one close by at McGee park but I don’t think they’ve had one for a few years.

The sale is at Mcintosh between Estancia and Moriarty we had to move it from Estancia. We usually have at lest two cat buyers, shelly has 5 confirmed so far.

I tried to get some permissions in NM when visiting family in west Texas, but no luck. It's really a darn shame they took away public land trapping. Am I the only person having so much trouble getting permissions? It seems that way sometimes. I wasn't able to trap for coyotes at all this season because I couldn't get any permissions (either in IL or NM). I knocked on doors (one farmer in IL wanted to take my head off when I asked), made phone calls, left messages. It's really demoralizing.

Id planned to move to NM if i ever retired, such a pretty state and nice fur. Too bad the liberals ruined that state like they did California and seem to be a cancer spreading all across the western states.

Its a fight every year to keep our rights but I don't regret moving . Never thought about Elk or Cougars when I got here now I know what both taste like or trapping beaver till may 1. Trapping at 8000 feet plus and those cats that the furbuyers fight for!-----Those pictures say a lot if you're listening.

I agree with Tom 100%! New Mexico is a great place to live. It sucks that NM political agenda is mainly determined by voters in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, but fortunately I live in a very conservative part of the state, which I would say most of the state is, besides the bigger cities and a few other touristy/artsy parts of the state. Our big game hunting is as good or better than most western states, and you have that same odds every year to draw a tag, whereas most other western state big game tags have a points system. We have millions upon millions of acres of public land to hunt, hike, explore, etc., and honestly if you get to know some local ranchers it’s not to hard to find private land to trap. I have no plans to leave NM, I’ll just keep voting for what I believe in and fighting for the rights that we still have, and hope and pray that maybe someday things start to swing in our direction.

Thanks Osky! Definitely not on the same level as a lot of the guys on here but I think I do okay. I just set on sign and make sure my traps are bedded solid.

I’m an all or nothing kind of guy. If I’m gonna do something I’m gonna put 100% effort into it. It’s paid off this year, but I have to give a lot of credit to the dry ground conditions being great for keeping traps working.

Caught another nice male this evening, and following drag marks led me straight to an elk shed. I did set the shed there for the picture though lol.
