How much fleshing to send to Moyle’s?

It’s probably a bit late for me to be asking since the coyotes I want to send are already put up and dried. But I’m wondering if I can send them just stretched and dried and not completely fleshed? There’s definitely no excess flesh on them and this is how I’ve always sold them to fur buyers or FHA, but don’t want to send them to Moyle’s if they won’t take them like this.

Also on my bobcats and badgers I skinned them out all the way to the claws then just rolled them up and froze them. Can I send them to Moyle’s like this? They are also unfleshed and the badgers have plenty of fat and flesh that will need to come off before tanning?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Coyotes should be fine, they take trapper dried but the other need to be fleshed properly.
We've sent in badgers fleshed with feet on and fleshed out and they came back great.
Wire wheel worked for the feet after getting the bones out.
Flesh them and then put them on a stretcher to dry before sending.

Your hides need to be dry before sending them or they may slip waiting for tanning.

Wytex, thank you for your reply.

I guess I should probably go ahead and stretch and dry the bobcats also. I thought I might be better off trying to send them frozen.

The badger I’ll try my hand at fleshing them. Seems like every time I’ve tried fleshing something all the way to the leather, I tear holes in them. That’s why I’ve always just trimmed excess flesh off coyotes, bobcats, and fox, and put them on stretcher to dry. I’ll do some reading and watch some videos on fleshing and see if I can get a little better at it.

I know Moyles has a notice on their instructions on sending fur in that say no frozen pelts !!

you would do your self a favor in better product sent back to you if you fleshed and put up properly
be for having them tanned, they are also easier to store up if you wish to ship in larger amounts as well

I bought a very nice badger from a new seller this year and I'm concerned that when it got here it was
not dressed out properly. These nice furs are difficult to come by and I don't like them coming back with
rotary marks on them from quick fleshing at the tannery, makes for some very iffy tanning finals

RFrame, check out coon creek outdoors on YouTube, he has some great videos on fur handling. Stu is also a member here. Eric

Gritguy, thanks for letting me know about the frozen skins. I had looked at Moyle’s website numerous times but hadn’t seen this. I just looked at the order form and saw where it says “no fresh skins” and “frozen skins Al accepted from professional taxidermists only”. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention!

The next step should be a direct communication with Moyle’s to verify their specific requirements. Verification at this point is better to prevent unwanted surprises. Your question should explore whether Moyle’s accepts bobcats and badgers in frozen form because they need fat reduction.

Moyles does not accept frozen pelts. During their busy season, packages may sit in their receiving area for a couple of weeks before the boxes are opened and checked. After a couple of weeks out of a freezer, your bobcat and badger pelts might not be in very good shape. Probably not salvageable.

RFrame - if you are concerned about your fleshing skills on the bobcat and badger, you might see if their is a local trapper that can you out hands on. Videos are nice but some times that in person communication is helpful. Send Tom Fisher a PM, he might have some one to suggest that is near you.

bobcats are easy to flesh. badgers not so much. any furbuyer would likely do it for you for a fee. or another trapper. watch how they do it.

Badgers aren't too bad, other than the belly is extremely thin (and armpits). I use the dull side of my knife, on the neck and saddle area I use a slicing (side to side) motion knife flat on beam. Go slow and be careful.

RF you are welcome !

Fleshing most critters is something we all have to learn to do eventually, there are many times I wished I had some one around to help me with my work !

I always thought badgers were tough to flesh, until I bought some green Otters and had them shipped frozen to me !!

My lord was I wore out working on them, made badgers look like doing a bobcat !!

However I think it's just what on works on continually, however the proof is in the tanning when you get it back !!

You can do it. It’s a necessary step and excellent learning opportunity.

Sending them frozen or poorly fleshed will give you a learning experience. One that you will not like but will stick with you. Getting back tanned skins with large areas of missing or thin fur will be a lesson. Sending pelts with fat still on them will exponentially increase the chance of this, even with no "excess flesh left on".

Bobcats and badgers are valuable pelts and much desired, get help from a pro near you. Call your local Trapping Association to get names of local r=trappers. Here in Pa we are allowedonly one cat and there are no badgers, we all would love to have a chance to get one, congratulations on your catch......jk
