There was a write up about someone going through some old newspapers .. and come to find out,, Annie Oakley got a fine in a little town that is just north of me by about 12 miles.
You don’t necessarily associate Illinois with stuff like this..
Apparently Annie was coming through on a train and happened to be making a stop,,,
Folks were begging for an exhibition… so Annie obliged, with help from one of the owners of a local hardware store who supplied the ammunition.
Apparently they broke a law,,, disturbing the peace and shooting of a firearm on a Sunday…
lol!!
Pretty darn cool piece of history.
Also Abraham Lincoln was a regular visitor here making his rounds as a circuit lawyer and even had a debate right here in town with a prominent politician by the name of Anthony Thornton..
Just a tiny podunk town with a tad over 6000 people here,,, lots of cool history here
Even more famous people came through here to speak at the chatautqua building.. presidential candidate William Jennings Bryant, was here, Carrie Nation who was a big time celebrity back then, carried an axe and was anti alcohol…
Pretty nifty when you find out cool stuff about your own town’s history

lots of cool old history here is one it is in Jefferson county WI Bald Bluff the highest point in the area On July 7, 1832, at the height of the Black Hawk War, General Henry Atkinson and 3,500 cavalry and infantry troops camped on the prairie just northwest of this bluff. Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

That is cool. What is (or was as sometimes the name changes) the name of the town? Bethany was the name of the town, that’s just north of me where it occurred,,, I live in Shelbyville..

Cool story, I’ve always enjoyed western heritage history stories. I lived in Auburn, KY for a while in my early twenties. Not too far from Russellville where the James/Younger gang robbed a bank in 1868 I think. I always thought it was cool that just down the road from where I lived in Kentucky was a sign probably 18”x6’ that said historic Russellville(my name is Russell). I became friends with a guy that worked for the county and one day he showed up at my house with a historic Russellville sign that I’ve had for almost 20 years now. You would like the bakery that my Mom's uncle owned in Northfield, MN. Still has bullet holes in the walls from when the James/Younger gang tried to rob the bank.

I am in Faribault. You have no idea how sick of him I am. Carrie Nation was ugly as a mud fence.
