My first bow was a Fred Bear bow and arrows. Recurve with wooden arrows and real turkey feather fletching.

I had a difficult time getting his broadheads to fly true. Their design made them want to plane too much over longer distances

I met him once as our state bow shoot. The guy who road with us to the shoot worked for PSE and had a falling out with PSE. He created the first Brute broadheads. He introduced himself and Fred said I know of you and your broadhead. He then asked Fred what was the hardest animal you hunted, Fred thought a moment and responded, the elephant, it is the only animal I had to shoot up at. We all chuckled, I then shook his hand.

True, I found same problem. But, for it's time, they were deadly with the inserts.

My wife wants me to wear a bracelet that belonged to her grandfather. It says, "Do Not Resuscitate".

I know where that photo was taken. I have fished that chain of lakes where he shot that moose. There are grassy areas between the lakes and I've had to pull a small boat over beaver dams to get into them. If you read his field notes it names the lakes. I'm sure this photo was taken in one of those grassy area between the lakes. If you want to spend some time on google earth, look at the creek that comes out of Cliff lake to the south and goes into a chain of three lakes. The creek goes under a road now, but I don't know when the road was built.

I met Fred in the 80 ‘s if you could call it that. So did 800 gazillion other people.
He was at a SCI convention and was in a wheelchair and on an oxygen bottle. A lifetime of smoking had taken its toll.
A soft handshake, a smile, and a nod to a life well lived was the conversation we had.

My great uncle was a partner/bowyer with Fred from the 30's until the late 40's.. Fred wanting to go to glass bows was one the reasons they parted ways.

Cool photo. I thought I had seen all of Fred's hunting pictures, but do not remember ever seeing this one. Met Fred a couple times over the years, first time in the mid 70's. I know several folks that used to work for him in Grayling, Michigan. Grayling is only 25 minutes from here.

Supposedly taken at Cliff Lake lodge in Western, Ontario
