It is simply a wooden frame (1×4 or 2x4) with a wire bottom (1×1 wire) that serves as a foothold platform for use in muck and deep mud at narrow dam breaks and castor mound sets. Traps can be cabled, chained, or attached to rods for drowning.

I build these with short legs so I can stand on them and push firmly into the muck and they'll stay there (not float back to surface.) About 8" to 10" seems to be ideal depth. Beaver swims up...bumps into tray...climbs over on top with the footholds.

There is a video by a NY trapper (David Lafforthun)...Annihilation of Trap Shy Beaver that gave me the general idea. He uses trays differently and effectively, but in a more time consuming manner. I recommend his video.

That is a Bridger 5 on left and a No BS Beaver Extreme on right for size reference.

I will add that using boards that are 4" creates a step down effect...which is always good to increase odds of a high foot grab. Beaver commits with a downward step onto trap. Keep that in mind if ya build any.

Local guy wants 5 beav pelts to tan. He's picking them up tommorrow. I'm gonna try and NOT let him leave with one of those Freddie Krugers.

Pelts are folded taco-style, fur out for Groeny. Hard to see the bites. So, at $25/pelt..I wanna do him right.

so, the tray is 4-inch lumber around the outside, and looks like 2x2 in the corner 12 inches long ?

The corner "legs" are about 10 or 12".

They are cut from some silt fence hardwood stakes I had.
