On March 4, 1989, a racing buffalo named Harvey Wallbanger made his first appearance in California at Golden Gate Fields.
Owned, trained, and ridden by T.C. Thorstenson, Harvey Wallbanger raced against a quarter horse named Two Eyed Burt, ridden by “Cowboy” Jack Kaenel. In an exciting 110-yard sprint down the stretch, the powerful buffalo edged out his competitor by half a length.
The 8-year-old, 2,000-pound buffalo clocked an impressive time of 9.4 seconds, securing his 21st win in 26 races. (GGF file photo)[Linked Image]

Never have to worry about the saddle sliding up over the withers on a steep downhill! Or, need a Crupper. Neat photo, thanks!

I wonder how different the ride is on a buffalo compared to a horse.

As for riding a buffalo I've never done it , however I will say this when they start moving forward they in a sense jump up in the front end to get everything moving as it should .

Then when they get started going they can cover some country with darn few stops and cattle guards are a minor inconvenience as they can stand flat footed next to it and clear it with no problems what so ever .

You're friend along the snare line .

Yeah bison don't look all that fast until they come for ya. Then they will surprise ya.

Can you imagine back in the day when armies fought battles on horseback.

Seeing the enemy come out on the battlefield on buffalo would scare the crap out of you..... eek

No wonder the Indians said: “heck with it, run um off cliff.”
