If you have a young coon that will not go into a cage, very likely it has been caught before. Chicken guys find that out when they trap their chicken killer, release it a few miles away and it beats them home. Then they can't catch it again. On a game camera, a trap wary coon would probably setup shop at cage mouth and start reaching. Dumb ones will walk in like they own the place. OTOH, you can catch same possum a bunch of times before it wises up.
I'd leave trap out with skinny trail of dry cat food on the ground, outside and inside cage where it falls into the cage wire on the ground. Jackpot in the back. May take days, but it will eventually go in far enough to get caught.
Easy to vote your way into socialism, but impossible to vote your way out of it.

If you got any big trash cans, shove the trap in that and set it. Some raccoons just wont go in cages, usually ones that have been caught before. This. In a pinch if you don't have a can that will fit I have just placed the trap in a garbage bag so the only thing exposed is the front. Once caught it will likely shred the bag but at least you have your coon. I've caught a good amount of the tougher ones this way.

Try putting bits of bait just outside the door of the trap, and a little more just inside; make a little trail going to a pile of bait in the back of the trap. This usually works for me Worked that way for me too with miniature marshmallows as bait.
My wife wants me to wear a bracelet that belonged to her grandfather. It says, "Do Not Resuscitate".

Dont over think it. Block off around the out side of trap so he cant reach bait. Dig a small hole under trap in back and put bait in a small lid under trap so coon cant get it ,put bricks on top so he cant roll trap over.

I've had raccoons try to dig from the side of the trap when I tried digging a hole under the cage and putting the cage on top. Some coons just dont want to go in that trap. Luckily the places I've tried it and had that happen where spots i didnt have to worry about domestics and a foothold placed on the side of the digging caught the coon.

Cover the trap with pine limbs, grass, some sort of cover. Everywhere except the front. Make it impossible for them to come in the back side. old piece of carpet or rug works great. Make it appear to be a tunnel or den . They will go in . Same trick will work for feral cats.

this coon keeps working the back of my cage trap but wont go in the front, how do i get him to work the front and go in it? You've gotta block it in the back and sides so he has no choice but to go in it to investigate from the front. Another trick i use is digging a hole under the trap pan and setting the bait there and then the trap on top of the bait.

What are you using for bait? dog food that is made of corn and has bacon fat in it, smells like bacon and smoke so figured it would work good. also using big marshmellows and a can with spiked fish oil in it
PETA is stupid.

They will never touch anything that shellfish again if they ever taste it.

Put bait in trap. Close the trap door. It’ll get frustrated because it can’t get the bait. 2 days later, open the trap and see what happens.
Also, put the back of the trap facing the wind. Wind will blow towards the door when it’s eventually opened.
Never too old to learn
