Our school district is asking parents their opinions on switching to this. Anyone had their kids change to this and did you see any negative effects?

My grandkids went to a 4 day week years ago and seen no bad effects they were both in high school so they were able to stay at home. Could see a issue with smaller kids that need supervision with both parents working

Students have to get up earlier and get home later, this can be especially hard on younger students in a rural school district. some of our bus routes are over one hour one way. No matter what you are being told your kids will have less instruction time and it is harder for the students who do sports or other after school activities, My wife teaches in a district that went to a four day work week to years ago and can" see any positives.

We see too much time on kids hands. You know what can and will happen with that event. Also costs more for the younger parents and finding places for their kids. Not all what it is cracked up to be.

Just one more day to have their little faces glued to a phone.

I would demand the amount of money for public schools on my property taxes is reduced by 20%.

Of course, that's not going to happen.

Call me crazy, but here is a listing if our school’s work load for this year. 8/20-5/16

.1. 169 school days of which 13 are 2:00 early dismissals.
2. 6 “in service” days
3. 22 days of no school
4. 78 weekend days (in session)
5. 96 days of summer break

If this was a 4 day week here, there would have been an additional 39 days off due to Friday’s.

Now I realize that teachers have a much needed job, but it is hard to argue that they are overworked. We need to find a better way to utilize the time our children are in school. As testing has shown, our school systems are failing miserably at educating our children as a whole. Now there are many, many excellent teachers out there doing the good work. But unfortunately there are many that are not. The fact we rank near bottom of the top 40 countries scholastically is inexcusable. I don’t claim to know the answer, but with the amount of money that has been thrown at the school systems over the past 50 years you’d think we could find an answer…. My mother was one of the good ones btw, when she retired she remarked to many of her friends at the party it was time, as she compared what was happening in the system as similar to flushing the toilet…. Our govt being involved in educating our children is not in their best interests. As I’ve stated before govt has never proved to be the best at managing ANYTHING. Here comes the hate, but this is my .02.

The problem with it is you can only focus for so long in a classroom environment. When I was in school we had a morning break of about 15 minutes, the lunch period, and a 15 minute break in the afternoon to kind of clear our head and refocus. My daughter gets 25 minutes for lunch with no other breaks during the day, there are 4 minutes between class periods where they are expected to take care of bathroom breaks and get to the next class which may well be on the opposite end of the campus adding 2 hours to each school day would just compound the problem. If I had it to do over she would be homeschooled, she would have gotten a better education and avoided a lot of the aggravation in the public school system.

So working folks will have to find daycare for one day, another added expense.

America still runs on a 5 day work week. I don’t think moving discipline towards that at a young age is a bad thing. Easier later on to gear back if you can rather than the opposite. The focus issues mentioned above are very valid too.

Far as I'm concerned, school should be like work, 5 days a week year round, basically 3 semesters, have a 2 week break between semesters....

We’ve had that for years now. Daughter is a junior now and has a perfect gpa and excels at volleyball, basketball and track. Having a little extra time to catch up on sleep before traveling to games on Friday is a good thing.

I have a 9 and 7 year old and hate 4 day weeks. I could see it being good for older kids that can work and take care of themselves but it sucks for two working parents to have to find daycare or adjust work schedules to accommodate a 4 day week.

I'm all for it. I enjoy having my kid home. There are two sides to every story and there are a lot of people who will take every opportunity to bash public schools. The 4 day school week has worked well for the districts around us. The school days are not counted like they used to be, it's hourly now (at least here).

Only if it will help them learn math...Pathetic math skills seem to be the norm now.

There are great kids in public schools. Statistically private schools and home schooling are turning out much greater overall numbers.
It’s not the days/hours spent at school that matter as much as what’s actually learned at school.
Address that before cutting time for the masses.

I don't wish to bash public school teachers, but will take opportunity to point fingers at national teachers unions.
Too many good dedicated rural teachers suffer financially at the hands of loud mouthed city street walkers!

We moved to a district that has a 4 day week when my kids were in 6th and 7th grade. We love it. My kids are junior and sophmore now. It is great. gives them time to do school work on Mondays you can do dr appointments dentist etc. It does lengthen the day by a little bit (We start at 7:45 and get out at 3:42) but we do not have teacher in service days we don't do early dismissal no spring break. It has allowed us to retain and add some great teachers. Also when we have snow days etc we can make them up on a Monday and not add to the school year

My son a junior 4.28 gpa class rank 1st
Cadet commander of his Civil Air Patol squadron
class vice president
FFA
FFA secretary
FBLA
NHS
NHS secretary
runs track
films the football games with a drone for the football team
Is going to compete at the state level for both FFA and FBLA
4 dual credi college cources this year and 1 AP class

Daughter a sophmore 4.11 gpa class rank first
FFA
FFA reporter
FBLA
NHS
NHS reporter
runs track
is on the high school dance team
competes in multiple FFA events just got back from the fall state public speaking event
does voice lessons
and gymnastics
2 DC College classes and 1 AP class

Point is kids don't have to fail with some free time. It gives them time to see what other things they like and to explore them. My kids also raise a few steers and about 10 hogs a year to make themselves a little income. It is all in what you make of it.

Now saying all that I can see where it wouldn't be great with little kids. But we love it for our kids
