You could use wild meat, but we use beef like a chuck roast, plus fruit like apples, spiced pickled peaches, raisins, currents, plus heavy spice load. The meat is in there, but hiding out in the crowd.

Original concept......it was a Christmas holiday pie..........livestock butchered in fall...........and every scrap of it went into something. After calf brains were harvested the head was boiled (my grandmother used a pressure canner) then meat like cheeks scraped off the scull. That was the meat they used for mince meat pie. Chuck roast is the easy button.

We used to make it with the neck meat from deer. We also had our own current bushes back then, it was a long time ago! It was more of a meal than a dessert.

That's interesting. I never thought of using wild meat. Probably because I only get it twice a year and no one else eats mincemeat pie.
Good idea.

ergo, bibamus.

My mother always used the meat from a deer neck. I am about to make some and think I will use deer and beaver. I was just wondering if anyone still makes it.
