This pond was a pretty good fishing hole, both for silvers and cutthroat, until the dam washed out last November. It was good timing cause that's where I got my first beaver. Now I'm hoping the rest of the beavers in the area will wake up and start fixing the dam cause I want my fishing hole back in the fall. Water level has dropped about 4 feet from maximum give or take.

I took a nice 15 inch cuttie last year and had to quickly escape back to my car after a brown bear came to see what I was catching. Had been catching spawned out silvers for dogs as well and had to leave them behind with the bear.

I catch trout out of the beaver pond behind my cabin in the summer. I've helped them fix their dam before, I depend on them keeping the water high for my other trail in and out during winter, summertime there's one way in one way out.

Here in the U.P. a typical beaver dam timline.

Year 1: Fresh dam. Most local fishermen will wait and try to keep it a secret. Forget that. I will fish it asap and the majority of the time take bigger brookies than you would imagine. My theory is, those bigger fish have always been there and the deeper water makes them more comfortable/bold.
Year 2: This is probably the year to let it rest. In a really good situation this sometimes takes more willpower than I'm capable of. Lol.
Year 3 and 4: Prime time. Brook trout grow fast. An 8 inch fish can grow to 12 to 16 in the right drainage within 2 years. There won't be many of them, so you can over fish it in a hurry, even if with catch and release. Trout are like beaver, pretty simple the first time, but if you harass them they can get very spooky.
Year 5 and beyond: On the downward slide. By this time the ponds around here will usually start to silt in or get discovered. I still keep tabs on them though because with trout you just never know.

Chasing brook trout is my favorite pasttime. One thing I really learned is to think outside the box, my best spot isn't even a designated trout stream. It's a very slow river that the locals think is full of chubs and trash fish. I just happened upon a short stretch that was spring fed and that area produces huge fish.
