Georgia DNR mails as many as you email/call and tell them you need (bobcats & otters). Must state county they were caught/killed and sex of critter.

Georgia DNR pays the postage. No charge for the tags.

Only needed if that pelt is gonna cross state lines.

Used here by DNR for a harvest estimate, but, as ClayC stated, it's all about "protecting" similar and protected species from uncontrolled international trade.

Yikes, sure makes things easier having a direct number to the permit desk & legal lady here!

How does a trapper know if his pelt isn't going to cross a border?

When MN had a wolf season, we didn't offer CITES tags. They couldn't be sold internationally

If trappers transport across state lines or ships out of state. Other than that...it's not the trappers responsibility...it is the person doing the transporting or shipping.

But, most out of state buyers wont buy otter and bcats unless CITES tag is already affixed to pelt.

Exactly. They would have none of the deeded info. Sex, date, county / region, or method of take. Because that information needs recorded the trapper needs to do it b4 he ever tries to market that pelt.

Would think FHA and the buyer would take care of that. For bear to enter Ontario it needs a licence tag & the claws/feet attached, other than that it’s all interprovincial. I can sell a wolf to any Canadian province, if the buyer wants to move it internationally, that’s on him. To cover that, he technically needs a possession permit….but I always call and double check. Sometimes it changes and even the permit desk winds up giving conservation the wrong permits to give…lol.
I wonder how many Manitoba wolves make it into Minnesota illegally with the dual citizenship trappers?

Here in MS, they charge for tags but the last time I bought them they were only $0.25 a piece. You go to one of the regional field offices and tell them how many tags you need for each species and they sell 'em to you. You don't need to bring in the animal or anything.

Just give me one thing, that I can hold on to. To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go.
