I heard that Kortum's daughter was there buying. Interesting that it's live auction for NM. Im not aware of any other western auctions that aren't sealed bid.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Colorado is also open auction. Montana started out as open auction but went to sealed bid after 3 years.

Live auctions have worked better for Colorado over the years, the trapper/hunter usually nets more. Especially nowadays, mainly because the market is driven in the country at the big sales by crafters, powwow folks, flea marketeers, tailgaters, and people that can and do pay more. The coyote market is saturated now and everyone is filled up. And yes, there is no market whatsoever for coyotes. Now you have to keep the coyotes out of your skunk and cat traps. Cats are hot right now, maybe to hot?

What I heard/saw at our sale was we had three buyers and only one would bid on coyotes without feet, the first bid was it 2$. That will make it easier for my hands next year. Liberty bought the sale, she left with a trailer full. I sold my cats in one lot, one med. the other 6 were big for me over 25 lbs on a beam scale the bellies are hour glass so nowhere what the 1000$plus cats brought. I have a taxidermy place to sell the early ones and lions, so all the ones I offered were heavy late cats. This was as big a sale as we get, we had fur from Ariz., Texas, Colorado, Ok and NM several of the thousand$ plus cats were from Texas Arizona and the Navajo has a wonderful cat one guy sold in one lot and averaged a lot. I saw a picture of one of his cats it is a dandy!
I personally would rather have a sealed bid, the way I value my fur is an average Im willing to take, too much thinking to split fur up and try to guess what its gonna do.Im satisfied with the cat price, coyotes not so much!

Its a good time to be a Trapper!

Really wish I could’ve made it! I’ve got 3 nice Jan./Feb. cats skinned out feet and rolled up in the freezer and just caught a dandy tom this morning. Trying to figure out what to do with them. I was gonna keep them all and have them tanned but I’m kinda thinking I should take advantage of these high cat prices.

You should sell those cats while the market is HOT. You can always tan ones to keep when the prices drop. And it will happen.

^^^^^^^^ THIS! And $2. average for nice New Mexico coyotes is way to cheap. Keep them frozen until next year. The coyote pipeline is clogged.
