Bufalo Bill Museum Cody, Wyoming
Trail Town Museum Cody Wyoming See Jeremiah Johnson's grave there
Custer Battlefield Just about 80 miles north of Buffalo, Wyoming Along the way you can see the Wagon Box Fight, Hayfield fight, Fettermans debacle
Museum of the Fur Trade Chadron, Nebraska

I could spend a couple of days in that Buffalo Bill Museum. You're from Maryland, bet you've seen the museum at Gettysburg. Buffalo Bill Museum is that cool.

Is that enough or do you want more?

Buffalo Bill Museum and Custer Battlefield for sure.
Also, Range Riders Museum in Miles City, Montana. All kinds of old cool stuff that you don't see in many places. It is really unique.

We went from NJ to Yellowstone a few years ago. Took all back roads, see a lot more of the country that way. Went from here to Ohio Trappers Convention then up through Michigan to the UP. Stopped for a day and took the ferry to Mackinac Island where there are no motorized vehicles allowed. Even UPS delivered in a horse drawn buggy. Went thru UP to Wisconsin, Minnesota ,North Dakota then into South Dakota to Deadwood. Spent 2 days there then on to Cody, WY and into Yellowstone. Must see the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody. Left Yellowstone went to Little Big Horn battleground. Then back through South Dakota's Custer state park and then headed home. Took 22 days.

If you like old guns the fur trade museum has a bunch.
