This one appeared to be a lightening strike and the bugs took it from there. Any idea what kind of wood this is?

Ide guess some type of red oak.

Looks like wild cherry to me. But if had pic before it was down would've helped

Based on how it splitting and this wide yellow outer layer, Black Oak it is.

Have you run into any red elm I’ve come across what I believe is and about 100 of them.

Red elm turns beautifully on a lathe and smells really good. We made some very pretty sock darners and spindles with red elm. We have red elms scattered throughout my area.

That would give it character for a project.

If that was here I’d swear that was pin oak, also a black oak species.

I've seen some beautiful furniture made where bug holes and other defects are filled with colored plastic epoxies. It's very unique looking.

Cut/split 2 big red elm last week for firewood. Standing dead, not a stitch of bark.

When my knee gets better I’ll start cutting, and may try some for lumber, actually Hobbie I know people that pay more for those bug holes, I don’t get it but they love it.

Now I’ll be looking for some “buggy wood” to mill up.

Helps a lot if you show the bark! Standing dead will hold water a LOOOONG time and cause spalting that can confuse the issue.
