Beaver meat is great for dogs but I think salmon was the gold star dog food for mushers for along while. Nowadays they'll usually take any meat though cause it's really expensive to feed your team.

They said at the start of the race, ever single dog on the team receives 10,000 calories worth of food ever single day! That’s a lot of food!

That is incorrect. The start was moved because their is a large area on the west side of the Alaska range, the farewell burn, that is snow less. Veternarians were warning of stress to the dogs.

I heard they yet again wanted to avoid all the drunks in the Armpit. smile

Salmon is the usual feed during the summer months but dried salmon in the winter was a staple for decades. The problem is that it is so low in fat compared to beaver. But you can put up a lot more fish in a day than you can beaver. Whitefish is far superior to salmon because of the fat content AND the dogs will eat whitefish raw & frozen. They won't do that with salmon

I did the math on that once and it’s about equivalent to a 200 lb person eating and metabolizing a gallon and a half of crisco every day . Calorie wise that is. grin

When I lived in Fairbanks I sold gutted beaver carcasses to a dog musher. They paid me $10 for a large and $5 for a small. I grade them out and met the guy, when he graded them he had more large then I did. He paid cash and said don't call anyone else. I will take all you get. So I never called anyone else, I was happy.

Fish and beaver is common among the mushers, but fish or high calorie dog food is used the most.

I don't know Snowy. They WILL eat it but they puke it right back up. You have to dry it or cook it before they can keep it down

Anyone know of a daily progress charted map to follow the race at? I have seen them in the past years and checked into the site and followed their progress. I can't seem to find a site to that this year.

"The 2025 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has 33 mushers participating.
This number is tied with 2023 as an all-time low, with the largest field ever being 96 mushers in 2008."

I think they are seeing hard times.

Go to Iditarod.com, then go to the Insider page. If you get a subscription for $40 you will be able to see the GPS trackers each team is carrying.
