The Holy Grail of coyote control trapping is a warm weather M44 pull bait/lure. That is what I am after.

Any help would be appreciated.

My current go-to bait is as follows:

6 oz. Coyote brains
6 oz. Coyote liver
1 oz. Beaver tail oil
1 oz. Glycerine
1/2 oz. Beaver castor
3 drops lovage
2 TB sodium benzoate

All ground fresh in a little blender. It gets real soft and creamy. Nice for smearing on a bait head.

Let sit for a week before setting if I have time. If not, I’m not afraid to set it same day.

I’m always trying little variations. Any ideas to make it better?

I don’t have definitive answers, but maybe some honey or lard? I made some pork belly burnt ends this evening and the lard that rendered out of that pork belly in the smoker might make a good ingredient according to how my dog was licking the grass where I poured the grease

So the more I look at your formula, I have a couple of questions. The coyote brains and coyote liver. Why coyote and not some other critter like beef, deer, beaver, ect.? Next question. The glycerin. Why is this in there as apposed to another natural oil or another ounce of tail oil? Just curious.

I think he was looking for a warm weather lure. While lard/fats are great attractants in the fall when animals are trying to bulk up for the winter, they lose a lot of their attraction in warm weather and get hard to work with. Same with honey; it's a good fall/early winter ingredient but gets real messy in warm weather.

The only ingredient I'd suggest you tinker with is trimethylamine. It's found in some fly baits. Go to Lowe's and look for the little greenish yellow pouches you add water to. They have a little packet of it in the fly trap. Try a little and see what happens. But don't tell anyone.

I would suggest using some Cultured Eggs. The good thick type.

For me the C. eggs seem to work as a mild emulsifier, helping to hold other ingredients together. Plus it has its own attraction benefits.

I use coyote brain and liver because that is what I used in the first batch I made last spring. It worked, so I stuck with it. Plus I have a steady supply of them since I trap nearly year round.

Our coyotes are funny about beef. I think we did too much 1080 baiting way back when. So I stick with wild game that has not been given any medications. I have used deer brain and liver, but it did not do as well as coyote for me. We don’t have beaver here, so that is out. I’m not even sure if all brains and livers smell the same or not. I’d love to hear some info on it.

I used glycerine because I had it on hand. I am also trying lanolin, but I haven’t got enough tests to get a significant result. I’m just trying to keep the lure from drying out on the bait head. Glycerine is stable at warmer and cooler temps.

I have fiddled with rendered bone marrow in place of and in addition to glycerine. I got it from a friend and I’m now out of it. It seemed to work fine. But I’m out now.

I have tried many, many professional lures and have some favorites. But I think natural is best, especially on warmer nights.

I hope to make 10-20 variations of lure this spring and set out grab sticks to test what gets pulled best. I’ll try cultured eggs for sure.

We do not have a high density of coyotes here. So testing may prove hard. But I’m going to give it my best shot. Thanks everyone for your input so far. Just trying to learn as I go.

I use a food grade grease that has a low melting point and stays pliable when it gets cold. I buy it on amazon "super lube" -45f to450f

Is super lube easy to heat up and liquify for easy mixing with other ingredients?

United we stand.

I ordered the lube. In place of glycerine, I also thought about using…

Leftover BBQ fat
Bacon grease
Cultured egg base (as Mark suggested)
Used cooking oil
I am testing lanolin now
Rendering some deer organ fat
I don’t know how to render fat. I’d like input on the best way.

I hope to eventually have many variations so I can rotate the lures.

Rendering fat you just need fat and heat. If you can grind the fat or cut it into small chunks first. You can let it sun render or put it over some heat in your kitchen. I’ve never tried fat from around a deers organs, but both cow and deer fat set up hard. I don’t know if your other ingredients would be enough to make it more pliable or not. Maybe mixing pork fat and deer fat could make it the right consistency to smear easy without being too soft or hard

I put some leftover fat drippings from the smoker in a hole at a set the other day. Just waiting on a coyote to come through so I can see how much they want to get it

When adding/mixing ingredients to the super lube I first mix it with beaver sack oil then add to the lube without heating, I find that the sack oil mixes better with what Im using. The lube being tasteless/odorless may work for a bait, I have found it stays put in temperature swings that I experience.

While they like the smell of it, in my experience most animals don't like the taste of it, so I don't know that I would add it to a grab'n'pull lure. But I have no experience with grab'n'pull lures so take that for what it is worth. Lanolin will get very hard at cold temperatures and I think its melting point is 80-100 degrees. Which may work for you for a warm weather lure. It does not work well for a cold weather lure here because it gets too hard, but I melt it and add beaver tail oil to it and use it as my base for my marten lure. With the BTO added (plus the other ingredients) its melting point is even lower, but it stays the consistency of peanut butter down to about -25, which makes it a good cold weather lure base for me.
