Really like the look of this beaver tail, want to make a wall piece out of it. Is there a good way to go about preserving it so it keeps it's shape and detail? Or do I need to open it up, scrape it out and tan it, then mount it back into shape? Never done a project like this so looking for a plan.

I would think freezing should be ok. Can you just drop it off at a taxi that can work with beaver tail or are you doing it yourself?

Make a reproduction/replica of it. YouTube can show you how to mold/cast stuff like that easily. I used to do it in my taxidermy shop quite often.

My son nailed two beaver tails on the side of the garage about 25 years ago. They are still there. Dried and curled a bit but still there.

Can't bring it to a taxi shop myself unless I wait a couple months, could try mailing it in, but I'd have to ask around and see who could and would be willing to handle it. Never had taxidermy work done so I don't have a contact. Would love to just do it myself but most of the resources I can find are about beaver tail leather, not preserving the whole tail.

You can freeze dry them if you know of a person who has a unit for doing that.

Some taxi's may be able to help you with it, other wise it is leave it in your freezer for some time, couple years
should do it !!

Did this one a few years ago. Threw some borax in there to help with the drying. At this point it could be wetted up and pressed flat and maybe a little lacquer to brighten it up. Should last for a very long time.

Nice. Maybe I'll toss this one in the freezer and practice a couple times first to make sure I've got the technique down.

That white stuff inside the tail makes great tough fish bait. Cut it to any shape you want and you are good to go......jk

I’ve tried that for codfish, similar to the old Uncle Josh Pork Rinds bait with no luck. Cut up tails did work for spot shrimp tho. [Linked Image]
