Took my nephews with me this morning. Caught a coyote and a nice tom cat. I think that makes 20 coyotes, 6 bobcats, and 2 badgers. 1 more week til I’ll pull everything. I know there’s still another big bobcat I’m hoping I comnect with before I have to pull.

How big is a typical ranch?
That doesn't look like very good cow ground, is that typical?

It varies quite a bit throughout the southwest but around here you can figure anywhere from 50 to 100 acres per head or cow/calf unit. Most ranches consist of some deeded/private land along with a blm, state, or national forest grazing allotment. The ranch I’m trapping is about 2000 acres private and another 10,000 or so acres of blm land, but I can only set traps on the private land. This rancher runs close to 100 head/cow calf pairs. It’s actually really good cow country especially on a year with above average rainfall. Very hardy high protein grasses such as western wheat grass, crested wheat grass, grama grass, needle and thread grass, and quite a few others. Cows also browse on four-wing salt brush, chico brush, red stem filaree, etc. It’s pretty common to wean 8 month old steer calves around 650 to 700 lbs.
