What smells do you find that makes fox and coyotes roll consistently. Thank you Mike

Just curious. Been in an area last season behind a few other trappers. They got wise. Was thinking that if I could get them rolling, I could catch them when they went to urinate

Putting your lure 18-20 inches off of the ground is a better option than catching front shoulder fur and educating them even more

Tainted rodent odor. Soured mice/moles.

You don’t want them to roll. You’ll just get a ton of fired traps. Most at that point blame the trap and call it a “pull out”.

Most guys would be surprised how many smells will (eventually) illicit a rolling response.

You just don’t realize it as you have them caught before they get to that point.

The rolling response always fascinates me.

Take a dog for example, I can run a dog past half a dozen ooey gooey melting down cows and get nothing. But for whatever reason, that seventh one theyll want to wear.

Or cow crap. Run around it all day, but than find that one that they just have to have on them.

Is it a specific smell there?

Or is it just a specific mood?

It’s probably some of both, but I think mood in the moment has quite a bit to do with it.

I don't plan on setting traps on what they are rolling in. I just want to get them primed up for a unine post. I'm just talking about canines that are hole and lure shy. I'm coming in to clean up what a whole handful of people have educated. I have never mastered snaring. Just trying to think outside the box. Thank you all for the replies, Mike

Natural baits and subtle sets or plain old blind trail sets are what I go to for those situations.

One thing most canines can’t seem to resist rolling on is a piece of dried up hide that still has that earthy, musty, decomposing smell on it.

Something that was probably pretty gross a month ago, but has by and large dried out.

Listen to Boone, but to answer your question, beaver tail oil or some nasty, mostly liquified meat. I have put deer and elk scraps or bear scraps in a bucket or glass jar before and poured just enough water over it to cover and let set for a year. Make sure and vent your container, and don't fill it over 2/3s for deer and elk or halfway for bear (I don't know why, but I found out the hard way bear expands more than deer and elk) to allow for expansion. When you open that container you will have a pourable stink bait that is LOUD!

Also, most commercial "rub lures" will elicit a rolling response if placed on the ground. Although a lot of them are designed for cats and have enough skunk essence in them to cause wary canines to shy away.
