I do love a rub set and am always looking for that natural spot. I need to use more "homemade" post while cat trapping. Any recommendations, preferred wood or such, on making homemade post? I use beaver chewed sticks about baseball bat size

That's a good idea. That fresh wood color would serve as a visual attractant. Thanks for the tip.

I'm sure Savell can explain the mechanics of his set- I do crowd the pan as close to the post as I can.

If you watch a domestic cat rub up against something, watch where they place their feet when doing so. Usually their feet are very close to the object.
Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

… lure is in the trash pile on left as well as lure on the post…trap center between the two
Insert profound nonsense here

I have made some myself out of beaver castor and mineral oil. I think i let it sit in the shed three years. worked great, when i started using Sierra mist, things got to a new level. My change up and also a major rub set lure is Skunky Backbreaker from Dobbins. I seriously think that if i just had a ball bat sized peeled willow from a beaver dam, and had it where i had the cats in a funnel, their instinct is to mark and rub on it. However, when you put that sweet smelling odor on that rub post. There is gonna be a cat hung up in that set in a few days. I tried all of these lures on peeled beaver posts in my yard for all the resident feral cats. complete with trail cams set to video mode. Most educational to say the least.

Dave I just got some Skunky Backbreaker in the mail and I look forward to trying it. I do myself a favor by water trapping before I break out the cat traps because my rub posts not only snag greys but also coon, skunk, and possum.

Lefty, if the temps are slightly warmer as they will be, get some of the regular Backbreaker and reserve the skunky Backbreaker for when the temps drop. It wont take much to freshen up a set with it. I honestly dont think it really matter which of the three I used. Set on sign and in bottlenecks. Their own curiosity will be their demise. The skunky helps the volatility of the lure and carries the castor smell in the air currents. Thats why I posted the info on trial use with trail cams on video mode. For me a trash pile set, by itself, I am using visual attractors, feathers, and gland lure with cat pee. Savells double eye appeal is a treasure as long as you understand their instinctual behavior. when we trapped they were looking for the gals. With that said. any cat gland lure and visual attractors with a healthy dose of cat pee along with a rub post. That should be absolute death on a cat. I never saw Savell make this set when we trapped together. However, it is pretty freaking smart to do so. The application i see being even equal would be Savells set and then if you are on a firelane in these piney woods, make a necked down trail set with a #3 or 4 DLS on the exit side of your set as an extra bonus. Savell can attest to this effectiveness when we were running together. Matter of fact, if you are targeting cats specifically, I would have trail sets on drags 40 yards prior to and on the exit side irregardless. Up your chances if you have the hardware to do so. We did. and we were trapping close to 75,000 acres depending on the year. I had close to half a million acres of timber company land to run on. We usually focussed on a 28,000 acre place and that took two days to cover.
