"pictur of coal mine petrified tree stump inwalkies -barre ,pennsylvania - Search" (16) Facebook This photo, dated to 1918, shows miners standing around a very unique find-a petrified tree stump. It is not uncommon to find certain types of fossils during mining operations-this is one of many examples. Have you ever found fossils in Appalachia? I’ve found many fossil imprints over the years when walking in the mountains, especially in areas where the ground has been turned. Hope this comes out right......jk

In 1918, coal miners uncovered a petrified tree stump encapsulated within a coal seam. This discovery is a vivid reminder that coal is more than just fuel, but also preserves pieces of our planet’s ancient past. Most of the tree-stump fossils reported from the coal fields of Kentucky are not petrified
