Egg in a hole is what we always called them. Made a lot of them for our niece several years ago.

My wife has taught middle school and now teaches 5th grade and treats her students to a cooking day a few times each year. This is one of their favorites.

I make them for the kids. First time was when the wife and daughter were out of town my oldest boy was maybe 8. he looked at me concerned with basic 8 year old innocents and asked me well moms got what are we going to do about food? I said kind of not grasp his thought process yet I will cook! He looked at me perplexed and said you can cook with a question in his voice. Then I clicked they had never seen me cook since my wife enjoys it and thinks having food made for the family is part of her purpose in life so while I would help with prep like dicing or other prep work I generally stayed out of her way in her kitchen.

So I explain to the boys yes I can cook and if it got cooked when I was a kid I did the cooking but you mom likes to so I let her take over that. Then to show and prove the point I flat threw down in the kitchen the next 3 days. Eggs on a hole with the bread soaking up bacon grease was one of the first things I made them. kind of back fired because it was different cooking then the boys were used to and they liked it and the being involved in the cooking and told their mom they really liked dads cooking when she got home. Hurt her feeling some when they told her one giving the info and the other chiming in with excitement.

There's a hole in that bread. It must be a bunt.
