A 4-year-old Washington girl was "dragged" by a coyote just inches from the front door of her home on March 11, her father told local news.

The incident comes amid a string of coyote encounters and attacks in a Bellevue neighborhood, prompting state wildlife officials to lethally remove two coyotes in recent days.

"It was just walking on the mat," Chang Tong of Bellvue told KIRO, referring to his doormat outside his home in the Factoria neighborhood.

He and his daughter were inside, standing by the front door, when the 4-year-old reportedly pushed the door open and stepped outside.

"She [was] about to pet on the dog at that time, and with just one second, the coyote just bit her hand and tried to drag her," Tong told KIRO. "She was dragged to the ground."

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife noted in a March 12 update to a press release about the recent coyote incidents that the child was bitten on the hand and taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for "minor injuries."

"Officers quickly responded to the scene and located two coyotes. Officers were able to lethally remove one at the scene, however, the second ran away. Officers are increasing patrols in the area to locate the second animal," the Department said.

Yikes!

Well, the victim wasn’t old, so the child must have been weak, diseased, or crippled.

Removing the best control devise from use does have its draw backs.
Feel sorry for the kid. Just hope the parents are ones that voted to to ban grip traps.

And here’s the issue here is we can’t really trap coyotes unless it’s a nuicance permit in a certain property that is causing damage, since the passing of law preventing foothold traps coyotes cats and bear really are no longer afraid of humans at all and if you dig a bit this isn’t a singular thing it’s happening all the time now

Real traps got banned in WA in 1999 or 2000. I'm assuming from the fathers name that they're probably fairly new to the US.

Wouldn't the dad have known it was a coyote, and stopped the girl from trying to pet it? Or if he did think it was a dog, who would let their daughter pet a random stray dog?

This is interesting. Bellevue is basically Seattle...just across Lake Washington from Seattle.
I just finished helping a Seattle transplant who came to Nebraska. She is spending her own money going around to different towns, trapping feral cats, taking them to a vet and the towns pay $80 per cat to have them spayed, shots, whatever, then releases them where there were trapped. I helped her do 25 in this little village. There are easily a couple hundred more I'm sure.
I sent our porch cat with her to get spayed and she had already been spayed sometime in the past.

It has already, more than once.

in town or not A coyote on my porch would had been killed. Poor kid to have such an ignorant father.

When I take my son to the parks in the outer Denver area there are signs that coyotes are seen frequently in around the parks. Just lists a bunch of things you should or shouldn't if you see one.

In the winter I try not to do any nuisance jobs so I can run my long cat and marten lines but get called in to do coyote jobs quite a lot and 90% of them are in community housing areas with coyotes either killing cats and dogs or harassing kids and quite a few are Bellevue,Kirkland and shoreline . Most these houses are multi million dollar homes on a 1/4 acre lot so it’s challenging but a dirt hole with cavens and sheep wool gets them every time in the winter but summer dogs are more challenging
