While changing smoke detector batteries, I placed fresh batteries in one pants pocket and used ones in the opposite pants pocket. After completing the chore, I removed the batteries, except I mistakenly left one battery in my right pocket. Later, I felt a burning on my leg. The battery had contacted a coin, resulting in a dead short and a red hot battery.

I have a square blister on my thigh from the over-heated battery. Lesson learned.

I am 78 and should have been wiser. Heck at my age I shouldn’t even be up on a step ladder with nothing to hold onto.

I was out at a remote spike camp, hunting moose. Soaked from head to toe. Both my lighters wouldn’t work. I got the 9v battery from a smoke detector, shorted it out with a bread bag twisty, got toilet paper to catch fire. Built a nice fire in the woodburner.

I did something different, but similar, years ago. I was about 12 years old maybe and had just got a new zippo lighter I was all proud of. Well, one day, never even considering it was in the pocket of my shorts, I jumped into our farm pond. Didn't feel anything at the time, but once I got out I had a burnt spot on my thigh larger than a softball. Not blistered, just angry red. The water had pushed all the lighter fluid out of the lighter, against my leg, and it had burned it.

I use my car battery and jumper cable to start fires if I can't find a lighter. Usually try to keep a Firestarter in my car though.

Don't that just burn your butt?

9V battry and fine steel wool will make a fire too. Also car battery and fine steel wool.

Been many years ago already. I put a new rechargeable AA battery in my front pants pocket. Never thought nothing of it until like you it got hot. Must have lined up just right on my keys. Couldn't get it out of my pocket fast enough. Didn't actual catch fire but made a nice red spot on my thigh.
Haven't done that stunt again. Did hear where someone had back pack catch fire with loose 9V.

Nails are for lumber, not digits.

I have nothing clever to put here.

You can do the same thing with most any battery.Even a AAA battery.Just have something for insulation between your fingers and the wire/battery.Gets hot enough to glow,,so you will get burned with no protection.

I can top that. I used to carry spare AAs in my pants pocket all the time for my GPS. I had a few 22lrs thrown in that pocket also one time and was driving down the road about 4:30 in the morning and had those batteries short out on the 22 shells and had one of the 22 shells go off! Blew the brass into shrapnel and put a bunch of holes in my pocket, had to pick a couple pieces of brass out of my leg and had some powder burns, but luckily, since it wasn't contained there was enough force to penetrate more than the top few layers of skin.

I'm glad there wasn't any traffic on the road though, I'm pretty sure I wasn't going in a straight line after that went off.
