Great ruling and it applies to lands in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming.

Hunters must cross over the corner and not touch the private land.
Better have a really good GPS.

I can see a lot of "ladder bridges" getting toted around out there.

That's a good deal for American hunters that can work hard enough to get there....lots of ranchers out west lock up huge tracts of land just by owning the frontage peices

This is where Onyx would come in handy.
There's a little mountain chain in Wyoming on public land that I'd really like to get into but it's landlocked by private land.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

That’s a definite win for hunters! Gonna suck packing game out though, lol. OnX did some sort of research and there are millions of acres of public land that is landlocked. Some hunters have even hired helo’s to drop them in some of these areas.

I heard of a hunter in Wyoming that crossed a fence just to visit with a fella he saw working on trees and got a stiff penalty for trespassing.

It’s been a battle for this for a long time and finally get the win just in time for non resident tag fees to skyrocket in price . Getting to be a rich man’s game , we will still hunt Idaho and Montana but Wyoming for general tags is getting outta hand priced

How about Montana?

This ruling only applies to states in the 10th Circuit District, but I think those were the only states where it was really a question. Wyoming was the main one where they considered it legal to block access to public land. I know landowners in other places do, but it is commonly understood in many places that you can't block access to public land. That law was passed back in 1885 but Wyoming ignored it. Which is why this case went to court in the first place.

Awesome! Sounds like the judges ruled 3/3 the same way if I'm reading correctly? Nice to see so much ground opened up.

but does "peacefully entering" allow one to cross private land if it's the only way to access the public land?

Wonder if landowners will be allowed to put up structures to prevent a guy from crossing? I can see some of them trying.

Corner Crossing Ruling

Its a win for hunters everywhere I believe. I realize that it only applies to the 10th district states, but lots of people from all over hunt in those states.

As long as you don't step on, drive on, etc. the private property.

I am positive some will. I have observed where they have torn down public land boundary signs to make it more difficult for visitors to know where exactly the boundaries were. Once I was with an outfitter when he tore a state trust land sign down ("Wyoming State School Trust Land- Public hunting, fishing etc allowed" or something pretty close to that) that had just recently been placed. When I questioned him about this, he responded "The rancher doesn't want them up but we have strong winds in Wyoming; it would have blown down anyway" and smiled smugly. Grrr.
This was about 13 or 14 years ago; now most everyone has a gps ap to work from.
Certainly not all are like this, but some are.

Correct. This ruling as far as I can tell ONLY applies to corner crossing. This is a very specific ruling. It does not apply to ordinary crossing of private land to reach public. You still have to pay to do that. Oops, I mean "have permission."

The UIA prohibits LOs from erecting anything that prohibits access to public lands, so no they can not put up tall fences.
And Gary , no that would be criminal trespass if you have a weapon. Civil trespass without one.
This applies to corner crossing only, not trespassing to get to landlocked public lands.

The ruling stated they were ok because they did not touch the private land.
Now, if you can find the corner markers you can literally step over it to corner cross, no need for a ladder.
