not in like 40 years with a cane pole and then it was actually a bamboo cane that we tied on fishing line and use a hook and split shot and bobber
it was a pond stocked with bass about 84 only rule was we had to throw back the bass as it was a guys private pond catch and release but man you could catch some nice ones.
for 20-25 years my tackle box was mostly different size jigs and some hooks and almost no lures
I had the same shimmano spinning reals and a pair of Abu garcias for about 30 years also , when I started making some actual money I bought reels and had 3 rods I was living the high life.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Same type of pole works great for crappie when on the banks spawning. Sold mine to a guy at a garage sale. He came back 3 times to offer same low ball price.........finally bought it when I suggested it would be cheaper to just pay the extra $5 than to keep coming back.......but I guess it was the principle with him. He wanted it......really wanted it.........cheap.

You bet Wuffy late 60's early 70's It was nothing to see people out on the lake fishing with cane poles my dad said if you had something to big and afraid your ole would brake you just thru it in the water and let it drag it around sport shops and gas stations had a bundle of canes usually hung under the eaves Our lakes in winter were dotted with tag alders froze in the ice You tied on your line and hug so9me slack on the branches so the fish got a head start before being brought up short most trout fishermen on our "cricks" just had black line in there pockets and cut a switch when they started fishing Thank You for bringing up a fond memory

My dad said growing up he'd have a bit of line coiled around his hat with a hook on it, and if he saw a good trout hole he'd simply stun a grasshopper with his hat then use the line to fish the hole from above.

I caught grass hoppers early. right before the sun came up when it was still pretty cold. Used a flashlight. They were easy to pick up. Grampa had switched from bull duram roll your own to prince albert tobacco in a pipe. Said cigarette paper was bad for you. I put grasshoppers or worms in one of those prince albert cans in a hip pocket. other pocket had a can with some extra line split shot and hooks. Water is clear. have to literally sneak up on trout. dont let your shadow get on the water. Stand behind bushes.

Older fella on the Mississippi back in the '60s used to anchor above a wing dam and allow the boat to drift over the rocks so he could fish off the stern and be in deep water. He used a stout cane pole with braided line and would use live frogs on the bottom. He hammered the walleyes and catfish.

I had a friend who won dozens of local bass tournaments using a fiberglass jig pole. He fished with his girl friend, who mostly just sat in the back of the boat. The technique was so effective the tournaments outlawed it. My friend then put a feel and eyes on his jig pole. Finally, he was not allowed to enter future tournaments. He was that good. He paddled his small skiff. No electronics and no trolling motor.
